VALE Professor Mohammed Peter Jalie SMSA, FBDO(Hons), Hon FCGI, Hon FCOptom, MCMI 1941-2026

It is a sad day for the world of ophthalmic optics with the passing of Professor Mo Jalie. Professor Jalie was one of the most influential figures in the modern history of ophthalmic optics and dispensing education. A distinguished educator, author, researcher, and mentor, he dedicated more than five decades to advancing the science and practice of ophthalmic lenses and vision care worldwide.

Professor Jalie served as Head of the Department of Applied Optics at City & East London College, where he taught generations of opticians and optometrists from 1964 until his retirement in 1995. He was best known as the author of the seminal textbook Principles of Ophthalmic Lenses, now in its sixth edition, which became foundational reading for students and practitioners across the world.

Throughout his career, Professor Jalie authored or co-authored nearly 200 academic and technical papers and several major texts on ophthalmic lenses, contact lenses, dispensing techniques, and optical theory. His pioneering work in lens design, aberration control, and surface geometry significantly influenced modern spectacle lens manufacturing and professional practice. His mathematical and optical contributions helped bridge the gap between theoretical optics and practical lens design, shaping standards still used internationally today.

A respected leader within the profession, he served as Master of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers in 1993–1994 and was a consultant to major international lens manufacturers. He also contributed to the original educational team behind Varilux University in Paris, the first European education centre dedicated to presbyopia and the ageing eye.

Professor Jalie was widely admired not only for his intellect and scholarship, but also for his generosity as a teacher and mentor. His influence extended through countless students, educators, researchers, and industry leaders whom he inspired throughout his remarkable career.

In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to optometry, education, and the ophthalmic industry, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science by Ulster University in 2018.

Professor Jalie has left an enduring legacy in ophthalmic optics and vision care that will continue to benefit practitioners and patients around the world for generations to come. He leaves behind Sheila his wife, Jeremy, Simon and Natalie his children, their spouses and grandchildren. May you rest in peace. 💕

Reframing the “Intermediate Zone” in Progressive Addition Lenses: A Functional Field Perspective

Progressive addition lenses (PALs) are traditionally described using a three-zone model: distance, intermediate, and near. While clinically convenient, this framework introduces a conceptual error by implying the existence of a discrete intermediate region with defined optical function.

In reality, PALs exhibit a continuous distribution of power and astigmatism, with no true boundaries between functional states. This lecture extends that critique by examining early presbyopia and behaviours that are commonly misinterpreted as evidence of a functional intermediate corridor, reinforcing the persistence of the three-zone model.

Using power distribution analysis, gaze-dependent viewing geometry, and accommodative considerations, the session redefines intermediate vision as an emergent property of the optical field rather than a spatially fixed region.

Clinical implications are explored, including misinterpretation of adaptation, inappropriate lens design selection, and limitations in patient communication. The discussion aligns practitioner understanding with contemporary freeform design principles, emphasising continuous optimisation over zone-based thinking.

Learning Outcomes

1. Critically evaluate the concept of an “intermediate zone” in progressive lenses

Participants will be able to explain why the traditional three-zone model is an oversimplification and identify how it misrepresents the continuous optical structure of PALs.

2. Differentiate between true corridor utilisation and distance-zone function in early presbyopia

Participants will understand how early presbyopes often achieve intermediate task performance using the distance portion of the lens, and why this is frequently misinterpreted as corridor use.

3. Apply a continuous field-based framework to clinical decision-making

Participants will be able to reinterpret patient performance and complaints using a gaze-dependent, accommodative model of lens function, improving prescribing accuracy and patient outcomes.

Join Dr Grant Hannaford on Friday 29th May for a free 1 hour webinar offered at two different times 12 noon and 6pm Sydney Australia time.

Australian CPD accreditation pending.
