Washing your skin too much can strip its first line of defence: the acid mantle.
The acid mantle is an integral part of your skin barrier — a very thin, slightly acidic film that sits on the surface of your skin.
Its naturally acidic pH helps create the right environment for your skin microbiome — the community of microorganisms that live on your skin and help keep it healthy and balanced.
When we cleanse too often, use harsh cleansers or repeatedly strip away skin oils, the acid mantle is one of the first parts of the barrier to be disrupted.
The result? The skin's pH can become temporarily disturbed, the microbiome's environment can change, and the barrier may become more vulnerable to dryness, irritation and sensitivity.
Think of the acid mantle as the outermost protective environment of your skin barrier.
Protect the acid mantle → support the microbiome → support the skin barrier. 🌿
