Never too late to learn new things. πŸ’™

Ever tried a breathing exercise on a 15 year old?
Working with teenagers is different. Your framework should be too.
Most therapy models were built on adult populations. DNA-V wasn't, it was designed specifically for young people aged 12–24.

Here's what developing your skills with it actually looks like:

πŸ”΅ Beginner β€” you understand the model and can observe the six DNA-V processes in yourself and your clients. You know how to introduce the framework in a way that feels tailored to each young person rather than formulaic, and you can assess and formulate using the DNA-V assessment tool.

🟑 Intermediate β€” you identify patterns of behaviour and examine their function, dive deeper into relational language patterns, use your own noticer to shape client responses fluidly, and work across all six processes with real depth including advisor, noticer, discoverer, values, self-view and social-view.

🟒 Advanced β€” nuanced formulation and practice. You shift across processes fluidly in session, work with complex presentations including trauma, create your own exercises, design group applications, and deliver supervision.

Where do you land?

Dr Louise Hayes, co-founder of DNA-V, is running a live intermediate workshop this June for practitioners working with young people aged 12–24.

Five traps that show up in ACT practice even when you know the model well.

Behaviour analysis gives you a lens for spotting all of them.

One. Acceptance that's actually avoidance. The client looks calm, disengaged from the struggle. But the behaviour hasn't shifted. The function of the avoidance is still being served.

Two. Values that never become actions. The client can articulate what matters to them. But articulating isn't doing. Values without behavioural follow-through aren't functioning as values yet.

Three. Defusion that skips the function. We help the client step back from the thought. But we never ask what the thought is doing, what it's been reinforcing, what it's in service of.

Four. Missing what's reinforcing the problem. The intervention makes sense in the room. But something in the client's environment is maintaining the very behaviour we're trying to change and we haven't looked there.

Five. Insight without behaviour change. The client understands. They can explain the model back to you. And nothing is different outside the session.

Most of the time it's not the intervention that's missing. It's the functional analysis underneath it.

Natalie Savage-Evans is running a practical half-day workshop on exactly this on 23 June.
