Playing Talking Learning

Playing Talking Learning Playing Talking Learning is an organisation that delivers Speech and Language Therapy to individuals, in schools and in partnership with organisations.

PTL delivers Speech and Language Therapy to individuals, in schools/online & in partnership with organisations; is based in the UK and Africa; supports language growth with the Traffic Light Profile Playing Talking Learning works directly with children and together with parents, carers, teachers, other professionals, and governmental and non-governmental agencies, i.e. all those who live and work

with and teach children, to ensure that children receive the best support for their development, particularly their language and communication development, from the adults in their lives. Playing Talking Learning works directly with children and others to support and extend the development of children’s playing, talking and learning, through a range of means including direct therapy, training (of parents and others), consultation, interventions, service development and delivery. Playing Talking Learning raises awareness, knowledge and skills of parents and educators, and the range of professionals involved with children, to support children’s language and communication development. SOME HISTORY...
Olwen Morgen, the founder of Playing Talking Learning, set up PTL in 2018 in the UK and Zimbabwe. Motivated by the lack of speech and language therapy services in her homeland, Zimbabwe, Olwen started a range of projects in Zimbabwe from 2013. These continue to the present day, focusing on raising awareness and knowledge of speech, language and communication difficulties in children, and developing carer, parent and teacher skills in dealing with these difficulties at home and school. In addition, Olwen partners with various Zimbabwean organisations and individuals to improve the lives of children and parents and to thereby ensure improved outcomes for children. MORE ABOUT OLWEN! I am a therapist with more than 30 years of experience of working within a broad range of community health and educational services as a speech and language therapist and as the manager of and professional lead for speech and language therapy and multi-therapy services. Beside working privately/in my own business in the UK, I have also worked successfully as an independent practitioner in Australia, South Africa, Denmark and Zimbabwe. I work with children and young people across the age range (0 to 19 years of age):

-in a variety of settings, e.g. homes, my clinic, pre-schools/mainstream schools, special schools;
-with a range of disorders, e.g. pre-school and school-aged language and communication disorders; students with a range of special needs, particularly ASD, up to their transition onto college;
-in collaboration with parents, and a range of professionals and agencies to a highly specialist level. I have a depth and breadth of experience in teaching, training and supporting parents, colleagues, other professionals in the identification and management of speech, language and communication difficulties in children. I am Hanen certified (It Takes Time To Talk; More Than Words); and recently have certified to deliver Hanen programs online. I use a wide range of assessment and therapy tools, and am increasingly developing individualised therapy resources for each child and young person that I work with. My areas of expertise include developmental speech disorders, developmental language disorder, early stuttering (Lidcombe), ASD (PECs, ABA certified). I developed and have extensively used The Traffic Light Profile. The Traffic Light Profile (TLP) provides a means for professionals, those who are and who are not Speech and Language Therapists (SLTS), and parents, to profile a child in terms of his/her play, interaction and communication, understanding of language and expressive language skills. It’s not often that speech and language therapists have the opportunity to target future occupations from the age of 10!

A is passionate about and motivated by football. On his journey to learning about all the potential roles and jobs he may have within his beloved football, a primary step made today was attending his first live match! Redbridge FC - they wore blue against their opponents who wore red! It took a few moments to work this out!
Redbridge won 6-0! Yay!

A’s experience today
Finding Redbridge FC’s stadium ✅
Connecting with and supporting a local community team ✅
Commentating on the game and choosing his ‘men of the match’

AUTISM AND LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT

Olwen Pate, an experienced Speech and Language Pathologist, is a longstanding key member of Team Mukundi. She recently paid Mukundi a visit to check on his language development journey and to give practical tips, strategies, and advice to Mukundi's primary caregivers. While a skilled and knowledgeable Therapist is key to any form of development to the affected child, an informed caregiver is one of the most underrated blessings the child can ever have.

Olwen believes in this concept and has always been available over the years to offer her expertise to the Team. We do not forget the Traffic Light System that she taught us years back as parents. That was a game changer!

Thanks O.

Wonderful to re-connect with Shaheedah Aufe, Speech and Language Therapist, and friend. Shaheedah is advocating for posts within health for SLT graduates. It is a significant role, challenge and achievement! Shaheedah also mentors, employs and supervises graduates and interns so that they are able to practice.

Such an amazing colleague to us and visionary for the profession in Zimbabwe!

Thank you Shaheedah for all you do and are!
Onwards and upwards!

A lovely reunion with my Teacher friends from and in Marondera - Jannie, Pauline and Aquiller!

We worked together over a number of years before Covid to increase literacy outcomes with their pupils in the early years. They are Print Referencing gurus!

Pauline continues to use the books provided as she is teaching Grade 2 pupils and regularly applying the principles of print referencing to increase her pupils’ knowledge and recognition of print!

Beautiful ladies, beautiful work, the best outcomes.

Well done well done SuperStars!

‘Talk the Talk’ with your children - speech and language therapy workshop in Vic Falls.

We spoke about the daily practice of talking about what our children are interested in - ‘you are pushing your truck, we are washing our hands, there goes the bus, that’s the dog’.

We stressed the importance of conversation and repetition to help our children learn about communication and to hear the words that describe their interests and their day, throughout the day!
