Interested in Conflict & Catastrophe Medicine?

The Faculty of Conflict & Catastrophe Medicine, in partnership with the Lionel Penrose Foundation, is offering 5 fully funded places on the 2026–27 Conflict & Catastrophe Medicine course starting this October.

The funding covers:
✨ The full course fee
✨ The cost of the 2027 Diploma Examination taking place in June

Applications are open to medical students and registered Allied Health Professionals who can demonstrate a financial barrier to accessing the course and have a keen interest in conflict and catastrophe settings, public health, peace or related fields.

The course is delivered remotely and flexibly, making it possible to study alongside other professional or academic commitments.

🎉 Introducing our new Master Apothecary!

We are delighted to announce that Dr O’Mórdha has been elected Master of the Society of Apothecaries.

Dr O’Mórdha has served as Governor of the Apothecaries’ Hall of Ireland since 2024 — an institution incorporated in 1791 and successor to the 1446 Guild of St Mary Magdalen.

The Society of Apothecaries and the Apothecaries’ Hall of Ireland have operated as separate institutions since their respective foundations. Never before, however, have the two institutions shared a presiding officer.

Dr O’Mórdha’s election therefore marks a historic first, as he becomes the first individual to hold both leadership positions.

We look forward to welcoming Dr O’Mórdha as Master Apothecary and to the year ahead👏

⭐️ In one of his final acts as Master, David Jefferys was delighted to present a framed copy of John Keats’s examination entry, dated 25 July 1816, to William Edwards, long-standing curator of the Gordon Museum at .

The entry records Keats’s successful completion of his licensing examination with the , including the lectures he attended and his hospital training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals.

The presentation followed a recent visit to the Gordon Museum, where Bill Edwards showed the Society’s party its remarkable collection of material relating to Keats. He expressed the Museum’s wish to have a copy of the licensing entry. The request was brought back to Apothecaries’ Hall, where the document was located and a framed copy prepared.

💬 David said: “As a Guy’s graduate, and during the 300th anniversary year of the founding of the hospital, I am delighted to present this framed copy of John Keats’s licensing entry to the Gordon Museum. I hope it further deepens the long-standing relationship between Guy’s and the Society of Apothecaries, celebrated each year through our Lecture.”

Bill Edwards warmly thanked the Society for the “splendid and thoughtful gift”, noting its importance to the Museum and to future collaboration with the Society.

A wonderful connection between Keats, Guy’s Hospital and the Society of Apothecaries, linking us back to 1816.

Applications for the 2026–27 Apothecaries' Prize are now open. If you have undertaken innovative research that advances medical knowledge and practice, we encourage you to apply.

The Prize is aimed at:
- Doctors eligible for a consultant post in the UK within 3 years
- Registered pharmacists working towards a recognised advanced level of practice or entry level consultant. Medical candidates will normally be in a specialist registrar training programme.

👏 Congratulations to Liveryman Dr Tristan Barber on his election to the Governing Council of the IAS - International AIDS Society.

He assumed office on 31 July 2026 for a four-year term (2026–2030), at the close of the Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

🌍 As one of four elected representatives for the Europe Region, alongside Alexandra Calmy, Olga Gvozdetska and Asier Sáez-Cirión, Dr Barber will help guide the IAS's thematic work and represent the interests of its global membership.

⭐ We warmly congratulate Dr Barber on this significant international leadership role and wish him every success during his term.
