She lost 4.5 kilos by eating more and exercising less...

Make it make sense!

Ladies & Gents, I have to share how my amazing client lost 4.5 kilos in 4 months without even trying! She didn’t come to see me for weight loss—her primary goal was to work on her nervous system and hormones after years of trauma.

As I always say, weight loss is just a pleasant side effect of achieving homeostasis within your body. What I have observed is that a lot of my clients are super dedicated to their intense HIIT workouts 3/4 times per week —but despite their efforts, the scale isn’t moving, or even worse, they're gaining weight.

What might be happening? 🤔

We’ve all heard about how high cortisol can lead to weight gain, and now everyone sees cortisol as the enemy. But here’s the thing: while chronically elevated cortisol is not ideal, low cortisol production isn’t ideal either. And it tends to happen after prolonged periods of stress, when the adrenal glands become tired and struggle to produce sufficient cortisol to meet the body's needs.

That’s why it’s crucial to assess both your adrenal hormones and s*x hormones to really understand what’s happening in your body.

Enter DUTCH test here, which I ordered from Regenerus Labs

💡 When your cortisol levels are low, your body is already under stress. HIIT workouts, while effective for many, can push your body into "stress overload."" Instead of burning fat, your body might enter 'survival mode," holding onto fat and slowing down your metabolism.

Here’s why:

👉🏾Stress overload: Cortisol helps your body manage stress. When it’s low, your body struggles to cope with the physical stress of HIIT, triggering fat storage—especially around your middle—as a protective mechanism.

👉🏾Blood sugar crashes: Cortisol plays a crucial role in maintaining stable blood sugar levels. With low cortisol, intense exercise can cause your blood sugar to drop rapidly, leading to cravings for carbs and sugary foods post-workout, resulting in overeating and weight gain.

👉🏾Muscle breakdown: Instead of building muscle, your body may break it down to meet energy demands, slowing your metabolism and making weight loss even harder.

✨ What you can do: Focus on gentler forms of exercise like yoga, walking, or light strength training to reduce stress and support your body.

Remember, it's not just about working harder; it’s about working smarter. 💪

Don't know if you have high or low cortisol? And why you can’t seem to lose weight despite hitting the gym regularly?

My client’s LDL cholesterol has dropped by an impressive 30% in just 3 months!

This awesome progress highlights the impact that focused dietary and lifestyle changes can have on our health.

In today’s high-pressure world, where demanding careers often require us to be at our best, maintaining optimal health is more than just a goal—it’s essential.

One crucial aspect that’s frequently overlooked is cholesterol management, especially reducing LDL cholesterol, often referred to as "bad" cholesterol (even though it's a bit reductive to think of cholesterol like that). Elevated LDL levels are a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

But there’s good news: consuming Omega-3 fatty acids can REALLY make a difference!

Found primarily in oily fish like salmon and mackerel, Omega-3s have been extensively researched for their heart health benefits. A study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming 1,000–2,000 mg of combined EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) per day can lower LDL cholesterol levels by 4-10% over 6-12 weeks.

While this might not seem like a lot, it's enough to significantly reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes, and all the cardiometabolic issues in between.

But there's more to it. A meta-analysis in The Journal of Lipid Research showed that Omega-3 supplementation also increases HDL cholesterol, the "good" cholesterol, by 1-3%.

Cholesterol numbers aren’t just figures on a lab report—they’re crucial indicators of future health risks. With nearly 40% of professionals experiencing elevated LDL levels, we can't just take this lightly. Incorporating Omega-3s into your routine is a strategic investment in your long-term health and vitality.

Here’s how you can get started:

*Aim for at least two servings of oily fish per week or take supplements providing 1,000–2,000 mg of EPA and DHA daily.

*Opt for Omega-3-rich foods such as flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts (though only 10% of plant-based omegas are converted into DHA and EPA).

*Exercise for 150 minutes per week to help reduce your LDL cholesterol by 5-10% over time.

Of course, Omega-3s are just one piece of the puzzle. So get in touch if you wish to chat about your health goals. There is so much functional medicine can do for you.

Imagine a world where we don't just manage symptoms—we heal from the root !

I've had a couple of really exciting calls this week with people interested in functional medicine.

My heart melted when I heard them say : "Someone told me I should look into functional medicine, so here I am."

I am over the moon to see more people looking beyond the traditional symptom-focused medicine model. There is so much we can do beyond just managing symptoms.

Recently, a 36-year-old client told me that her normal cycle came back. Another 33-year-old client shared that her rheumatoid arthritis pain has significantly reduced since we started working together.

These successes aren't achieved through symptom management. They result from using a root cause approach, considering personal health data, nutrition, lifestyle, and supplements.

Did you know that elevated fasting insulin levels can be detected up to 13 years before a Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis?

As a Functional Nutritional Therapist, I am passionate about early detection. I spend hours analysing my clients' blood tests and request additional labs to identify imbalances early.

When assessing blood sugar levels, many people focus primarily on fasting glucose and HbA1c. While HbA1c provides an average of your blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months ( the lifespan of your red blood cells), it does not give insight into how well your body is producing or utilising insulin. Understanding insulin secretion and production is crucial for managing metabolic health and effectively regulating blood sugar levels.

Fasting insulin is a more precise marker as it measures the body's immediate insulin response to glucose, providing a clearer picture of insulin function at a specific time.

For those who want a more detailed analysis, C-peptide is an even better marker. C-peptide is a byproduct of insulin production and is released in equal amounts to insulin. It provides valuable information about how much insulin your pancreas is producing.

Knowing the state of your metabolic health allows you to take proactive steps with nutrition and supplements to avoid more serious health issues later on. Metabolic health is crucial because it can lead to or worsen conditions such as hypertension, PCOS, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.

Routine blood tests might not include these advanced biomarkers, but functional labs do. If you have any questions, please reach out!

Does eating organic increase the nutrient value of your diet?

The answer is HELL YES.

Soils are depleted....

Because of intensive farming methods such as monocropping or the heavy use of chemical pesticides and fertilisers.

For example, the iron content of broccoli has decreased by more than 60 % in 80 years.

So, does eating organic make a difference?

Yes, 1000% , even if your diet is not 100 % organic. Every little helps, you know ?

You may not notice the difference immediately, but overtime you will.

Happy healing, everyone!

High LDL cholesterol?

Last week, I did a presentation on personalised nutrition, highlighting the importance of testing before deciding to follow a generic diet.

If you have elevated LDL cholesterol, here are some invaluable insights to customise your nutrition plan....

One of my favorite tests is called the organic acids test. Organic acids are found in urine and can provide insights into various metabolic pathways.

For example, if you have elevated LDL cholesterol, understanding how your body metabolises lipids (by looking at markers such as adipic acid, suberic acid, or sebacic acid) is key to identifying the root causes/ contributing factors to your high LDL cholesterol. Also, the organic acids test measures markers of oxidative stress, which can also affect lipid metabolism and contribute to higher LDL cholesterol levels. A blood test generally only provides the "what," but an organic acids test can provide information around the "how" and the "why'' and also provide a list of nutrients to prioritise ( see example below, from Genova Diagnostics)

Now, by incorporating a gut microbiome test into our investigation, we can delve deeper into the analysis and also assess the amount and type of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as butyrate which has been shown to inhibit cholesterol synthesis in the liver by downregulating the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is crucial for cholesterol production.

By integrating results from both the organic acids test and the gut microbiome test, we can determine exactly what nutrients are needed to optimise lipid metabolism.

This comprehensive approach is what personalised nutrition is all about—tailoring dietary interventions to your unique metabolic and microbiome profile to achieve the best health outcomes.

If you're not getting to the bottom of your cholesterol issues, get in touch. This situation is 100% reversible.

Ok, this needs to be said...

Far too many people are struggling with serious nutrient deficiencies, especially in B vitamins. I can't recall any client having optimal levels of B vitamins !

What's concerning is that the symptoms of B vitamin deficiencies often resemble those of depression, anxiety, stress, and chronic fatigue.

Plus, relying on outdated reference ranges can be misleading. We can't expect peak performance ( family life, career, relationships, social life, sports, etc...) from anyone with just ''normal'' levels of B12.

Before prescribing medications or making dietary recommendations, let's prioritise thorough assessments ( comprehensive blood, urine or stool tests). By uncovering underlying nutritional deficiencies, we can effectively address them.

Happy healing, everyone !

If you have multiple passions, why box yourself in a category? 🤔

That's the topic my dear friend and accountability buddy, Alice Dartnell, discussed last week during our accountability call. And you know what? We came to the conclusion that you can have it all, without feeling overwhelmed.

The "secret" is having strong boundaries, great energy management skills ( I get all my tips from Alice), eating nutrient-dense foods ( what sort of Nutritional Therapist would I be otherwise?), moving your body daily, breathing properly ( which is something I didn't know I needed to improve, thanks to Jane 👃🎤 Tarrant, and dropping the perfectionism ( which I used to be a pro at for far too long)

This year so far has been extraordinary for me. I've landed more speaking gigs to spread the word about the central role of nutrition in our wellbeing, new incredible clients to support on their journey to optimal health, taken a lecturing role to inspire the next generation of Nutritional Therapists, and even secured an exciting new collaboration with a longevity clinic !

I'm 110 % dialing in to my mission - to make the world a better place, one gut at a time - so much that I only see opportunities and zero obstacles.

Here's my point: Before you focus on all the things that could go wrong or prevent you from achieving your passion or dream, how about focusing on all the things that could go right? This doesn't mean there won't be challenges, but your ability to reframe these challenges will transform them into endless opportunities. It's never rejection; it's redirection. And don't forget to surround yourself with a squad of people who want to see you succeed and can call you out when you're playing small.

Let's break free from the boxes we've put ourselves in and embrace all of our passions.

There's no such thing as hormonal balance....
..at least not in the way we usually think of balance. Women's hormones are in a constant state of change throughout their cycle, which means what we need to strive for is a dynamic equilibrium.

To master your hormones, you need to understand them and work with them, not against them.

For Endometriosis Awareness Month, I had the pleasure of leading a session for Amazon.com on how women can use nutrition, testing, and targeted supplements to make each phase of their cycle empowering instead of dreadful.

Thank you Amazon, for organising such a fantastic event for your teams. I can't wait to deliver this workshop again and again.

Do you know your baseline?

This is a question I often ask my clients when we begin our journey together.
Your baseline means your current status regarding your symptoms and biochemistry.

Here are 2 additional questions to help you answer this question.

1. What symptoms or discomfort do you experience on a daily basis? Are you tired 24/7? Are you bloated as soon as you wake up? Are you gaining weight at the speed of light?

2. Are you aware of any potential nutrient deficiencies, such as low levels of iron, vitamin D, or B12?

In the pursuit of optimal health, many people take generic supplements merely because Dr Google told them to. But the reality is that we are all biochemically unique; we all have unique imbalances and, therefore, different needs.

Therefore, following a custom protocol that caters to your unique needs can make a world of difference between feeling slightly better from taking random supplements and feeling distinctly better from following a strategic plan.

When we know your baseline, we can build upon it.

Here's how I can help you.

1. I assess your current and past diets, symptoms, blood chemistry, medical history, and other relevant factors to gain a comprehensive understanding of your situation ( and I refer accordingly)

2. I craft a comprehensive plan tailored to your needs, covering dietary adjustments, lifestyle changes, and emotional support (sustainable change requires feeling safe within your body). As you progress, we fine-tune the plan accordingly.

It's incredible how much people change when their body changes. Last Friday, I caught up with an endometriosis client I worked with last year. Today, pain doesn't rule her life anymore, she has a lot more energy, she even moved out of London, and got a dog ( a Shiba inu).

We are here to thrive, not just to survive !
Reach out if you want to know more about how I can help YOU.

Happy healing!
