Today is World Sickle Cell Day, and this year's theme is "Hope Through Progress: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Globally." Sickle cell disease is a serious and chronic blood disorder that affects millions worldwide, particularly in parts of Africa like Cameroon.

In Cameroon, an estimated 30,000 children are born with sickle cell disease each year, according to the World Health Organization It is a leading cause of under-5 mortality in the country. The good news is that significant progress has been made in sickle cell care and treatment in Cameroon in recent years. New therapies, earlier diagnosis, and improved access to quality care are giving hope to those living with this debilitating condition.

However, major disparities in sickle cell outcomes still exist. Many patients lack adequate treatment and support due to limited resources, healthcare worker shortages, and lack of awareness. On this World Sickle Cell Day, let's recommit to advancing sickle cell care for all in Cameroon:

• Increased funding and research into new sickle cell treatments and cures
• Ensuring universal access to essential sickle cell medications, screenings, and comprehensive care across Cameroon
• Educating healthcare providers and the public to reduce stigma and improve sickle cell management
• Empowering sickle cell patients and their families through support services and patient advocacy

Together, we can build a Cameroon where sickle cell no longer limits the potential of those affected. With continued progress and a national commitment to care, there is real hope for a healthier future for all Cameroonians living with sickle cell disease.

Millions of people do not know they have the sickle cell trait, because the trait usually does not cause illness. That's why it's important to be tested. If you and your partner both have the sickle cell trait, there is a 25% chance with EACH pregnancy that your child could be born with the sickle cell disease.

It is for this reason we had to ask people what they think/know about the disease.

So what is Sickle Cell?

Has anyone here had a bone marrow transplant that has S Beta Thalassemia ? My partner has just found out he has this after 3 very difficult months, at the age of 41. He’s had all the symptoms throughout his life but it’s never been investigated properly (in the UK). The doctors here are telling him that he’s not bad enough for transfusions or fetal heamoglobin. But he’s in a bad way, so we are thinking about paying privately for a bone marrow transplant. Just want to know if this has been successful for many people? Thank you

I get asked this a whole lot ❗

• If I live with "Sickle Cell" or just love to create "Awareness". Now I can say YES to both without a doubt!

• There was a time I didn't wear the "SCD" badge at all, for so many reasons but the major reason was because "I didn't understand the disorder at that time". Now it's all different, not completely understood but to a greater extent. I be wearing my "Sickle Cell Badge" boldly now 💯😚

🩸 If there's one thing I have learnt, is that I can't win every fight in life (sickle cell inclusive). And that's cool, I'm okay with that. Winning some & loosing a few.

🩸 When Sickle Cell wins, you know what other people don't see is, that apart from trying to heal physically from the pain & getting back on your feet. You got other healing to do (mentally, socially etc).

🩸 There's a fight out there (the plan is to live & not just exist warriors) & there is another fight here with our cells. We have all fought battles before (won some & lost quite a few) but those losses has never held us back from being who we are.

🩸 No matter the many battle you lived through (it's hard to master it because every war is different). One thing is for sure, we all have taken both on (winning or loosing) like true "WARRIOR" that we are.

🩸 I am proud of me, you should be proud of you too irrespective of whatever the situation might be.

🩸 What will be the point of all the pains you have lived through if you aren't willing to stand up & keep fighting?

🩸 Some day I'll lose, s**t I might die but I have built this me for years (I'm not going to lose her now). It may have won yet another fight but I'm not going to let it tell me I can't fight for it back because the war isn't over. Not after everything it has been through.

P.s: You still healing??? Pls take as much time as you need, there is no time limit on healing. Go & heal as much as you need & watch yourself become the most peaceful beautiful person you can be.

Nutrition for the Child with Sickle Cell Anemia

Sickle cell disease, also called sickle cell anemia, is a genetic red blood cell disorder that causes blood cells to take on a sickle or crescent shape. In the U.S., sickle cell anemia is most common among Black and Latino Americans. People with sickle cell anemia often experience episodes of pain, fatigue and frequent infections. Sickle cell anemia is associated with vitamin D deficiency and poor appetite. Both of these can lead to delayed growth and development in children and can result in a need for a higher amount of certain nutrients, including calories and protein.

Vitamin D works with calcium to help your child build strong bones. Make sure your child consumes vitamin D-fortified milk and gets adequate active play time outdoors. Children with darker skin may be more likely to be vitamin D deficient. Discuss vitamin D with your child’s healthcare provider and whether a supplement is needed.

Calcium and vitamin D are important for your child's growth and development, but other nutrients are needed, too, so good overall nutrition is essential. Keep these tips in mind to maximize your child's nutrition:

Make good nutrition a family affair so your child isn’t left drinking milk while everyone else has a soft drink.
Eat from a rainbow of fruits and vegetables and pair them with grains, and proteins (such as eggs, fish, chicken, meats, beans or tofu and nuts or seeds).
Get plenty of calcium-rich foods and beverages such as milk, yogurt, and cheese. Other sources of calcium include leafy green vegetables and calcium-fortified products such as soymilk and tofu, as well as some types of breakfast cereals and 100% fruit juices.
Provide nutrient-rich, high energy foods including dried fruit, nuts and nut butters, or smoothies if your child doesn't have much of an appetite. Sauces, gravies and sources of fat may also be added to meals and snacks for extra calories.
Encourage plenty of fluids, especially water, to help prevent dehydration and constipation.
Forgo sugar-sweetened beverages for milk or calcium-fortified 100% orange juice, which provide essential nutrients to help with your child’s growth.
Discuss vitamin D testing and supplementation with your healthcare provider. While sun exposure, eggs, fortified milk and yogurt provide vitamin D, it often is difficult to replenish vitamin D with food alone.
Understandably, it may be easier said than done. Busy families may find cooking at home to be challenging. Enjoying a meal together as a family is important, especially for a child with a chronic illness.

Work with a registered dietitian nutritionist to better understand your child's unique nutrition needs and identify quick and healthy meals that will work for the entire family.

Menstrual induced pain crisis.

There is nothing more painful😣 😩and frustrating than a period induced crisis.A Menstrual cycle is uncomfortable and can cause pain for every woman but they can be so painful and severe in women with Sickle cell disease.I am sure my female Warriors will relate.

Most times monthly periods have landed a lot of female warriors in the hospital because often a warrior can go into a crisis during or weeks leading to them. This can be so hard, not only does one have to deal with the menstrual cramps but also have to deal with the reduction of the already low hemoglobin cause by anemia and the pain in either the legs, chest or arms.Due to frequent pain crisis linked monthly periods, most Doctors recommend that female warriors use hormonal birth control to reduce the monthly cycle and reduce the Crises episodes caused by them.

Whether you go with the doctor's recommendation or not, the following can help to reduce a period induced crisis.

So weeks leading to the menstrual cycle, one should always try to.
◾Boost the hemoglobin (Hb), to lessen the general fatigue and dizzy spells.
◾Hydrate
◾Watch the stress levels. Even though it can be hard because of the hormonal changes of a cycle.
◾Have your pain meds and heating pads or hot water bottle in place.
◾To pray and be optimistic that you don't get into a crisis.
