October 29th is World Stroke Day. Today, we're reminded that strokes are a health concern affecting millions of lives.
Approximately 1.3 million live with stroke in the UK. Stroke strikes every five minutes. 100,000 people have strokes each year.
There are two leading causes of stroke: ischaemic and haemorrhagic. Ischaemic stroke is the most common cause of stroke, accounting for 85% of all cases. It is caused by a blockage cutting off the blood supply to the brain. Haemorrhagic stroke is caused by a weakened blood vessel supplying the brain bursting.
It is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the nation. Therefore, it is essential to recognise the symptoms and seek immediate medical attention. The quicker treatment begins, the better the chances of a successful recovery.
High blood pressure is the most significant risk factor for strokes. Regular check-ups and medication management are essential. A healthy diet and lifestyle can help prevent strokes. Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and exercise should be in your daily routine. Managing other conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease can reduce stroke risk.
