"Between the first and the last session of the training, the change was huge. We heard from the staff of the institution that some women started to say 'no' for the first time."
- Manel Mhiri, our Director of Advocacy, on our 'Closing Institutions in Jordan' project and the Empower Us self-advocacy trainings.

We're hearing all sorts of stories of resilience, community living, and transformation at our last side-event of , "Building Resilient Care and Support Systems for Inclusive Lives: Lessons from Deinstitutionalisation and Community-Based Support in Jordan and Zambia".

"The papers are too long. The meetings move too fast. And nobody asks if we understood. So we are in the room, but we cannot really be in the conversation. That is not participation, that is decoration."

Janet mentioned Listen Include Respect, the guidelines for organisations on participation, inclusion, and how to involve people with intellectual disabilities created by Inclusion International and our friends and allies at Down Syndrome International .

"It can be different. I know because I have seen it work firsthand."

Participation is not about being present in the room. It is about being listened to, included, and included in the conversation. Learn more about Listen Include Respect here: https://www.listenincluderespect.com/

Our movement at .

This week at COSP19, Inclusion International members came together in New York to connect, share experiences, and strengthen our work for inclusion and rights around the world.

Representatives from across our global network met alongside self-advocates, families, and allies to discuss the issues that matter most to people with intellectual disabilities and their families.

COSP is an important opportunity for our movement to bring lived experience into global conversations. We are proud to stand together and continue pushing for the full implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

πŸ”΄ Live from Roundtable 3 at . πŸŽ™οΈ

Right now at the UN in New York, the conversation is about political participation β€” and what it really takes for people with disabilities to not just be in the room, but to lead, speak, and shape decisions that affect our lives.

This is what the CRPD promises. This is what we're here to fight for.

"Nothing About Us Without Us: Self-Advocates Moving from Participation to Representation"

πŸ“… Today, Thursday 11 June | πŸ•¦ 11:30am – 12:45pm EST | Online

For 20 years, the CRPD has said that persons with disabilities must be part of decisions that affect their lives. But being in the room is not the same as having real power.

This event will hear directly from self-advocates, people with intellectual disabilities who speak up for themselves, about what it means to move from being consulted to being leaders.

Day 3 at . And it's a big one. πŸ“…

This morning, Roundtable 3 asks the question: how do we make life more accessible, so people with disabilities can participate, lead, and speak up for their own rights?

We're also co-hosting two side events today:

πŸ”Ή "Nothing About Us Without Us" (11:30am–12:45pm, online): Moving self-advocates from participation to real representation. Our President, Sue Swenson, will be speaking, alongside partners from the PM of South Africa and Down Syndrome South Africa.

πŸ”Ή Building Resilient Care and Support Systems (4:45pm–6pm, in-person, CR 12): Drawing on lessons from deinstitutionalisation and community-based support in Jordan and Zambia. Co-hosted with the PM of Jordan, Humanity and Inclusion, CBM, the European Union, and others.

One throughline: people with disabilities must be in the room, and at the table.

Follow along for updates throughout the day. πŸ‘‡
