Theo Wildcroft and Beverley Nolan (barefootbodytraining.co.uk) have written an exceptional book on how to guide the practice of yoga nidra. There's a wealth of insightful research on the science and history of sleep, as well as the process and structure of yoga nidra. What makes this a stand out work for me is the thorough in-depth research. Wildcroft and Nolan unpack complex western scientific information into accessible language and balance this with yogic philosophical concepts without making unsubstantiated claims. The goal? To enable teachers to craft and curate yoga nidra practices led through their own authentic voice (rather than a script), and to adapt the practice for the individual or group they are working with.
The personal voice of both authors comes through in every page as kind, thoughtful and compassionate. I particularly appreciate the modern pedagogic model that imbues this work suggested early in the book by asking teachers to consider themselves "facilitators" and that students might be better described as "participants," each offering the other feedback and adjusting the practice as need be.
The authors are wise to suggest that teachers develop a healthy scepticism towards many of the exaggerated claims of so many schools of yoga nidra, whether they be convoluted origin stories or reputed to be divinely inspired. . . especially because so many of these same schools have some unsavory histories.
Wildcroft and Nolan restore the practice as one that can be a restful and soothing or something that might take us a little deeper.
Highly recommended . . . add this one to your yoga library!
