I was at a cardiology appointment with my mum today.

Not working. Just being a daughter.

The nurse picked up that I knew the lingo and asked what I do. I explained. Mentioned PANS and PANDAS.

She stopped and said “I’ve heard of that. Actually, I have a friend whose child changed overnight. Completely different child. No one could explain it.”

We talked about the Stanford and Columbia research, and the work we have planned ourselves.

At the end she said she was so glad she had met me - and that she wanted to mention it to her paediatric colleagues and hoped I might come and do a talk for them.

I was not expecting that today.

This is why awareness matters. Not just in the clinics treating these children. Everywhere. In cardiology departments. In GP waiting rooms. In school staffrooms.

This is how change happens - one unexpected conversation at a time.

That's where Kai's parents were when they got in touch with us. Their 9-year-old had stopped sleeping, stopped eating, was checking the locks 30 times before bed, and his GP was running out of ideas.

Anxiety wasn't the answer. This wasn't a mental health problem. It was an immune one.

Right. Stop cooking your broccoli wrong.

Most of us are destroying the most valuable thing in it before it ever reaches our children.

Broccoli contains an enzyme that - when activated - produces something called sulforaphane. One of the most studied natural supports for detoxification, inflammation and neurological protection. All three matter a lot for children with PANDAS, PANS or autism.

Heat kills the enzyme before it can do anything.

So here is the fix. Chop it. Leave it on the board for ten minutes. Then cook it.

Ten minutes. Same broccoli, far more of the good stuff actually reaching your child.

Frozen broccoli? The enzyme is already gone - blanched out before freezing. A pinch of mustard powder after cooking restarts the whole process.

What did your child touch at the playground today?

A January 2026 report by the Pesticide Action Network UK tested playground equipment directly across 13 sites in England. Eight came back positive.

One borough was completely clean.

The one that banned it.

Today is World Autism Awareness Day.

But aware of what exactly?

The word "autism" is applied to the child who thinks in systems, builds entire worlds in their head, and will one day change yours.

It's also applied to the child who can't eat, can't sleep, is in pain, and is losing skills because something metabolic or immune or mitochondrial is going unaddressed.

These are not the same conversation.
One needs acceptance. The other needs answers.

And the parents looking for those answers are not in denial. That’s love.

We can celebrate autistic brilliance AND fight for the children who are medically unwell.

Both things are true. Today and every day.

Many of our children are dairy free.

Dairy is one of the richest sources of vitamin B2.

Here is the part nobody connects.

B2 has to be activated before the body can use it. That activation is driven by thyroid hormone. The active form. The one most panels never measure.

So the child is not getting enough B2 from food. And the body cannot activate what it does get.

Two gaps. One making the other worse.

If your child is dairy free, B2 is worth checking. An organic acids test will pick it up.

Best dairy-free sources: eggs, salmon, liver, mushrooms, almonds, avocado.

Your child's thyroid blood test came back normal. Case closed.

Not even close.

Most panels only measure TSH and T4. But T4 is not the hormone that does the work. It has to convert to T3 first.

In PANS and PANDAS children, inflammation blocks that conversion. Instead of T3, the body produces reverse T3. The cells cannot use it.

The blood test says "normal". The hormone is not getting through.

Low energy. Flat mood. Cold. Stuck.

We check the full picture. Not just the basics. Without it you are reading half the story.

Don't close the book on thyroid just because the basic numbers looked fine. We’ve seen children transform when this one piece falls into place.
