If you’re a human being on planet Earth, especially one who leads, teaches, creates, cares for others, or works closely with people — your life and work stand to benefit enormously from getting into poetry.
This Saturday, March 21st, is World Poetry Day.
It’s also the first day of spring. What a happy pairing?
The theme for World Poetry Day 2026 is: Poetry as a Bridge for Peace and Inclusion. In a world that often feels noisy and divided, poetry helps us circle back to our common ground, leaving us feeling uplifted and inspired. (The short poem from Daniel Ladinsky, quoted in my feature is a brilliant example!)
Along the way, other qualities begin to grow:
• Attention
• Emotional intelligence
• Deep listening
• Creative thinking
• An inspired way of seeing
• Nuanced communication
• A shared human perspective
To mark the occasion and to help you get set up for world poetry day this coming Saturday, I’ve shared five life-changing, peace-giving poetry books that I return to again and again.
Next week I’m back at The University of Westminster as a visiting lecturer, exploring the relationship between poetry, mindfulness, and psychology with students. A topic that continues to fascinate me the more I study it.
If you’d like the reading list and my pointers on the wellbeing benefits of poetry, you can find it in my latest article below.
Do you have a poem or poetry book you return to again and again?
