If you constantly feel tired, crave sugar, crash after meals or rely on caffeine to get through the day, your blood sugar may be on a rollercoaster.

Simple ways to support better blood sugar balance:

• Prioritise protein with every meal• Avoid eating sugary foods on an empty stomach
• Pair carbohydrates with healthy fats and fibre
• Start the day with a balanced breakfast
• Move your body after meals, even a short walk helps
• Reduce ultra-processed snacks and drinks
• Aim for consistent meal timings where possible

Balanced blood sugar doesn’t just support weight — it can improve energy, mood, hormones, focus and long-term health.

Standing in front of Battersea Power Station reminded me so much of our mitochondria, the tiny powerhouses inside our cells that convert the food we eat into energy.

From wealthy Victorian households to coastal fishing communities and industrial workers, fish was a common way to start the day. Before sugary cereals became popular, breakfast was centred around savoury, protein-rich foods that kept people fuller for longer and supported long working days.

Smoked and salted fish were practical choices before refrigeration, particularly in communities close to the sea.

Could B12 be the missing piece?

Best sources:
Red meat, liver, salmon/sardines, eggs, dairy — all provide active B12 for energy, brain and nerve health.

Why you may still need a supplement:
Some people don’t absorb or use B12 well due to gut issues, medications, or genetic factors (e.g. methylation-related genes like MTHFR gene mutation).

If you have symptoms like fatigue, brain fog or tingling, food alone may not be enough — testing and targeted supplementation can make a real difference.
