Literacy starts loooong before they ever hold a book.
Like with those nursery rhymes you’re constantly singing!
As parents, it's easy to feel like we need to do more.
We’re told to buy all the educational books, practise letters early and make every moment a learning opportunity.
But some of the most powerful foundations for reading are built through something wonderfully simple: singing!
This , here are five ways nursery rhymes help your little one grow:
1. They build phonological awareness
Rhyming songs help your child hear that words are made up of smaller sounds ("cat", "hat", "bat"). This ability to notice and play with sounds is one of the strongest foundations for learning to read!
2. They teach rhythm and syllables
The repeated rhythms in nursery rhymes teach children to break words into syllables (e.g. hap-py, el-e-phant), making complicated words easier to understand and say later.
3. They grow vocabulary
Traditional songs introduce rich, playful words that your child might not hear in everyday conversation.
4. They strengthen memory and sequencing
Repeating verses and actions helps children remember patterns and understand what comes next in a story. So important for reading later!
5. They develop listening and attention
Singing games encourage turn-taking, careful listening and anticipating the next cue. Let’s be honest… these are skills that we are constantly trying to teach our little ones!
