Are there any local swing dancers in Essex or Suffolk who might be interested in private Lindy Hop or Solo Jazz classes?

I’m now teaching private classes in North Essex and wanted to put out feelers to see if there could be any interest in either private or semi-private classes.

You might be a beginner wanting to build confidence, an intermediate dancer looking to polish technique and musicality, or perhaps you’re preparing for a wedding dance or special event.

I’ve been teaching Lindy Hop in London for over 25 years and have been lucky enough to study with some of the most important figures in swing dance. I trained with original Lindy Hop dancers from the 1930s and 1940s including Frankie Manning, as well as world-renowned Masters Chazz Young, Chester Whitmore, Ryan Francois, and Strictly Come Dancing choreographer Jenny Thomas.
I was also a UK Lindy Hop Champion, tap danced for Fayard Nicholas, and had the privilege of assisting Frankie Manning.

My approach is very personalised and focuses on good technique, musicality, and helping people feel relaxed and confident on the dance floor.

If private lessons or a small semi-private class is something you’d be interested in, do drop me a message and I’ll look at logistics.

I’m really looking forward to teaching Solo Charleston and Black Bottom at
South London SwingFest on Sunday 16 August. Two of my favourite Jazz Age dances, and although they’re often combined together, they each have their own distinctive character and history.

Charleston is all about energy, bounce, kicks and fast feet. The Black Bottom, on the other hand, has a wonderfully spontaneous, improvisational feel. I love that it’s built around simple rhythms, shuffles and personal expression, making it incredibly easy to pick up even if you’ve never danced it before.

The Black Bottom is an African American vernacular dance, originating among Black communities in the American South before becoming a huge dance craze of the 1920s. Like Charleston, it grew out of Black social dance culture and jazz traditions, where rhythm, individuality and improvisation were central to the dance.

In the Black Bottom workshop we’ll explore those simple rhythms, put them together in a routine and enjoy the freedom and playfulness that make it such a joy to dance.
Both workshops are open level and solo, so no partner is needed.

If you’re coming to SwingFest, I’d love to see you there for one or both workshops. And of course there are some great bands in the afternoon and evening that are not to be missed.
