The most damaging myth about meditation…
I’ve been quiet on here for a while, but I feel compelled to post after a meeting I attended yesterday...
The topic of mindfulness came up and I was shocked that so many people expressed they were ‘bad at meditation’ because they couldn’t keep their minds clear.
I think this is the BIGGEST myth about meditation and it makes me feel so sad when I hear people feeling like they have failed for this reason!
❌ Myth: Meditation requires a blank mind, free from any thoughts or distractions. If your mind wanders you are 'failing’.
The truth is that every time your mind wanders can be seen as a moment of SUCCESS because it shows you have awareness of what your mind is doing - this is mindfulness!
Our minds are naturally active and dynamic. Thoughts, emotions, and sensations arise as we navigate through life's beautiful tapestry. In meditation, we're not seeking to banish these experiences but rather to cultivate a compassionate relationship with them.
💡 Reality: Mindfulness is about observing our thoughts without judgement and gently returning our focus to the present moment. It's a practice of awareness, acceptance, and non-attachment.
🧘♀️ Embracing the truth: Allow your mind to be a vibrant canvas during meditation!
Instead of feeling frustrated when thoughts arise, acknowledge them with kindness. The magic lies in returning your attention to your breath, bodily sensations, or chosen anchor of focus.
💫 Remember: Meditation is NOT about achieving a clear mind, but about cultivating awareness of your thoughts and making a choice about how to respond to them.
Let go of the pressure to attain a perfectly still mind. Embrace the beautiful messiness of your thoughts, knowing that every time you notice your thoughts wandering is actually a magical moment of awareness.
