The mother of all tragedies is on her way. Put together the casualties in all wars in the past century. It will still not come up to 1.7 billion. That's the figure the FAO predicts in another 4-5 decades if we start running out of food.
When it comes to survival, every man is an animal first, and when push comes to shove, we will do whatever we need to, to ensure that we eat. Only when we have eaten, do humans attend to other areas of life, like work, educations, sports, entertainment, etc. In short, no food, no activity. Nobody in the world wants to go hungry or see their children go hungry. So, what wouldn't we do to ensure there is food on the table - steal, fight, kill, commit genocides, go to war. Get the picture?
Now, think of the most holistic and efficient solution. Replenish and revive the soil( especially in agricultural lands which accounts for almost 50% of occupied land) so that it has a minimum of 3-6% sustainable quantities of organic matter.
To do this, various layers of activities are needed.
- phase out monoculture,
-minimize inorganic chemical usage, mainly fertilizers and pesticides,
-phase in organic content derived from plant ( mulch, etc)and animal sources( cowdung, etc),
-reduce heavy industrial tilling to avoid destroying microbial ecosystems in the topsoil which support the various atmospheric carbon, nitrogen and hydogren cycles which support all life, and
-ensure there is always some green cover.
Government support for farmers and industries through incentives and proper controls is the only way, changes of such magnitude can happen. Sounds like a big ask? To put it in perspective, it will prevent the biggest genocides and civil wars with no equals in history. Isn't that a good enough reason?
There is no point planting seeds after you become hungry - Japanese proverb.
If we are human, at the very least, we shouldn't create and leave an impending disaster for our children.
Please, while there is time, start sharing the importance and urgency of saving our soil. Education is the first step towards action. Our leaders will listen when they understand that their voters want this urgently. The ball has already started to roll at . Now it's time to start playing hard.
SAVE SOIL. Let's make it happen!
