There's more to you than your profession.

Healthcare work involves ongoing responsibilities, continuous learning and demanding decisions. Making time for life outside work matters, too.

Spending time with loved ones, enjoying personal interests and pursuing goals beyond your career can help you manage stress, maintain meaningful relationships and find fulfilment outside your professional achievements.

Your well-being deserves attention beyond what you contribute at work.

Whatever your plans this weekend, make room for something that matters to you beyond work.

Leadership can begin long before your first formal leadership role.

For healthcare professionals, developing leadership skills doesn't have to wait until a management position becomes available. Taking initiative, supporting colleagues and suggesting improvements to professional practice are all ways to start.

Joining a professional committee, volunteering for an initiative or contributing to a workplace project can help you strengthen your communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills while learning to take on responsibilities beyond your usual duties.

These experiences can also help you understand different perspectives, work towards shared goals and build confidence in your ability to contribute to decisions and improvements.

Over time, the skills and experience you gain can prepare you for greater responsibility and future leadership opportunities throughout your healthcare career.

You can start building leadership experience where you are. Look for opportunities to contribute within your workplace or professional community and take an active role in your professional development.

The government is consulting on proposals to restrict high-risk cosmetic and wellbeing procedures in England to qualified healthcare professionals. Under the plans, procedures such as cosmetic surgery and certain injectable and laser treatments could only be performed by doctors, dentists and independent prescribing nurses, midwives or pharmacists, with cosmetic surgery restricted to doctors only.

Procedures would also be limited to people aged 18 and over, and breaching the regulations would be a criminal offence.

As winter approaches, healthcare organisations have an opportunity to review their staffing needs and prepare for the demands of the months ahead.

Increased service demand, unexpected staff absences, and pressure on existing teams can make it harder to maintain adequate cover. Without early planning, these pressures can leave organisations with less flexibility when additional support is needed.

Reviewing staffing levels, anticipated gaps, and shift coverage now can help healthcare leaders identify where extra capacity may be required before winter pressures intensify.

For organisations that need additional support, Verovian provides temporary and permanent healthcare recruitment, helping connect healthcare services with professionals suited to their staffing requirements.

For healthcare organisations, the quality of patient care is shaped by both clinical decisions and the systems that support them.

Appointment scheduling, clinical documentation, and information sharing all influence how efficiently services run and how effectively clinicians can carry out their work.

Technology and AI can help streamline these processes, from reducing routine administrative work to improving access to relevant information. But introducing a new tool is only part of the equation. Its value depends on whether it addresses a genuine operational need and fits the way care is delivered.

The real measure of innovation is its impact on everyday operations: whether it eases administrative demands, supports better coordination, and helps clinical teams work more effectively.

For healthcare leaders, this means looking beyond what a technology promises and considering how it could improve service delivery and patient care in practice.

NHS England has published new and revised guidance on managing staff facilities and hospital accommodation in line with the latest equality legislation. The guidance follows changes to the Equality and Human Rights Commission's services Code of Practice, which came into force on 5 August 2026.

NHS organisations are required to review and update existing policies on the use of staff facilities, or develop new policies where none exist.

The General Pharmaceutical Council has discussed new rules and standards for Responsible Pharmacists and Superintendent Pharmacists. Once implemented, the standards will strengthen pharmacy governance, provide greater clarity about roles and responsibilities, and support new pharmacy legislation across Great Britain.

The legislation, The Human Medicines (Authorisation by Pharmacists and Supervision by Pharmacy Technicians) Order 2025, aims to enable pharmacists to deliver more patient-facing clinical services and pharmacy technicians to maximise their contribution to pharmaceutical care. The approved standards are expected to be published by 10 December 2026.

The MHRA is introducing new measures to strengthen how key risks associated with antidepressants are communicated to patients, carers and healthcare professionals. Patient information leaflets will be updated with a new boxed warning on suicidal thoughts and behaviours, a patient card will be added to medicine boxes, and certain leaflets will include the term Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD).

The MHRA stressed that antidepressants remain effective medicines and, when used under clinical supervision, the benefits outweigh the risks for most people. Patients should not stop taking these medicines without first speaking to their healthcare professional.

How might these updates change the way you discuss antidepressant risks with patients? Share your thoughts below 👇

In healthcare, the information you share as a healthcare professional can influence what a colleague does next. An unclear handover, an incomplete record or a delayed update can leave someone without the details they need to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

Clear communication goes beyond passing information along. It means ensuring that important details are accurate, understandable and shared with the right people at the right time.

This week, take a moment to reflect on whether your updates, records and handovers give colleagues the information they need to work effectively and make informed decisions.

For healthcare professionals, mentoring is more than supporting a colleague’s career. It’s an opportunity for their own professional growth

It provides an opportunity to explain clinical reasoning clearly, offer constructive feedback and talk through decisions that might usually be made without a second thought.

These are valuable skills in clinical practice, communication and leadership.

Mentoring also encourages you to reflect on your own approach, revisit familiar routines and consider why you do things the way you do.

It’s a practical development opportunity that’s already within reach, through the colleagues you work alongside.

14/10/2026

Healthcare organisations can promote open communication, continuous learning and teamwork. But staff learn what an organisation truly values from how those principles are put into practice.

Consider how leaders respond when a team member raises a concern, reports an error or challenges an established way of working. Are concerns taken seriously? Are errors examined for lessons and opportunities to improve? Are differing views handled constructively?

These responses influence whether staff feel comfortable speaking up, whether teams learn from difficult situations and how effectively colleagues work together to address problems.

For healthcare leaders, building the right culture requires more than defining organisational values. It means ensuring that leadership decisions, management practices and everyday interactions reinforce those values, creating an environment where healthcare professionals can raise concerns, learn from challenges and work effectively together.

The DHSC has issued a national patient safety alert for two Levemir insulin products, which will be discontinued from the end of December 2026. Clinicians and prescribers must not initiate patients on any Levemir product, while community pharmacists must refer patients back to their prescriber to switch to alternatives, ensuring the patient has sufficient insulin first.

Existing Levemir patients must be switched in line with clinical guidance by 30 November, with local teams advised to diversify prescribing to avoid supply disruption.
