Voice Care Centre

Voice Care Centre Helping manage performers and improve complex voice disorders and medically unexplained symptoms MINDSET COACHING helps you slow down, focus and reassess.

The VOICE CARE CENTRE is not only the home of Vocal Massage in the West End, but is also London’s first multidisciplinary centre for REHABILITATING or MAINTAINING your voice. If you have never booked with us before then you may wish to book your INITIAL ASSESSMENT. In the initial assessment, you will be triaged among our brilliant team of holistic and medical voice practitioners who will tailor a

plan to get you to where you want to be. Each client can have up to EIGHT practitioners (including our voice specialist ENT surgeon) sharing information and forward planning back and forth. We are confident that nowhere else in the UK provides this kind of personalised, friendly and accountable service. The VOCAL MASSAGE treatments that we perform have become synonymous with the words “Pain Free”. Each Vocal Massage is as important to us as it is to you, with your safety and comfort the most important factor of the treatment. The Vocal Massage treatments we deliver in Central London are unique yet powerful, and all delivered by voice specialists who truly understand what it is to be a professional voice user. The (voice specialist) SPEECH THERAPY team are extremely effective at restoring function to your voice post surgery and can help alleviate the symptoms of complex voice diagnoses. This service is also used as part of our internal referral framework, helping restore function to the whole voice, not just the singing voice. This service is available as part of our AT HOME treatment plan. Your successful healing is inter-dependant on how clear your thoughts are, and whether you are attaching negativity to your work/ process. Usually one session can give you the tools by which to secure a healthier mindset towards your body and voice. VOCAL COACHING is a huge part of our multidisciplinary approach at the VOICE CARE CENTRE, and truly is an important missing link between therapy and normal function. Although our studio is separate to the clinic centre, notes will still be shared backwards and forwards from each practitioner, with your privacy and data fully protected by encrypted email servers and ‘2 factor authentication’. The Vocal Coaching appointments are made here:

VOCAL REHABILITATION is the final step between your surgery, speech therapy and your singing teacher. Each Vocal Rehabilitation booking is a block of 3 sessions which enable you to regain control and use your voice with minimal effort again. NUTRITION is a powerful missing link in the world of health and wellbeing which is often overlooked. This service can help tailor a nutritional or dietary programme to you, from a Voice Specialist Nutritionist who understands the demands of a singer. OSTEOPATHY has a long and important history with intervening with stubborn tensions, aches and pains and generally keeping your body running at an optimum. Our vocal osteopathy sees therapeutic intervention take place with the vocal, digestive and respiratory systems. OUR TEAM all possess specialist knowledge and qualifications within their treatment discipline, and are great listeners too. We know that the interaction of a treatment is just as important as the treatment itself, so we developed a process that helps boost the interaction you have with the therapist. At the VOICE CARE CENTRE, our personal touches to the treatment mean that people trust us, and come back time and again to help keep their instrument in good working order, and having been trusted by some of the West End’s biggest names, we are confident that we can help you get your voice to where you need your voice to be.

Let’s get a few things straight…

1. is real
2. can impact your voice
3. We’re getting better at researching this, and treating it too

In my work I’m seeing an increasing number of functional neurological Voice disorders, and body psychotherapy, vocal massage and creative Voice rehabilitation are all amazing tools to begin to explore change.

I’m doing a seminar at the end of September which will be introducing you to the concepts, dark history and clinical insights of FND.

Clicky larynx = healthy larynx?

The next bony landmark behind the larynx is the C-spine. There can be lots of bumps and lumps that are normal for this region. If you experience a clicky larynx, it could be the cricoid moving across the spine.

Of course, there are other forms of clicking that can go on in the larynx, and if you are concerned, it’s best to seek medical advice…Especially if your voice has been hoarse for three weeks or more.

What an amazing testimonial for our from Owen.

Owen was such a great student to have in the room, so knowledgable and kind.

We have now filled all the places for our online training, and still have some spaces for the North Devon intensive and the London modular.

Nobody at the Voice Care Centre can diagnose Voice problems.

Our job is to help people understand and treat the experience of the Voice problems.

Within this comes a great responsibility and how we think together about what any given experience is on any given day.

Sometimes our Voice is reflecting what’s going on in a wider context of our life…Sometimes our voice is a great emotional barometer…Sometimes our voice is showing us that our hypermobile experience has been pulled to a limit. And sometimes, yes, we might have good old “muscle tension dysphonia.”

“‘I Have Had to Stop Singing Because I Can’t Take the Pain’: Experiences of Voice, Ability, and Loss in Singers With Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders”

15/08/2026

Muscle Tension Dysphonia- is it ‘real’?

because I didn’t have a traditional route into voice therapy through a speech therapy, hospital competency pathway (instead I had a largely experiential and research focussed journey)… I’m constantly questioning stuff that other people might take as read.

One such thing is MTD.

If a diagnosis has “ muscle tension” in the title, you would expect to feel muscle tension, or experience muscle tension consistently within the experience. However, based on emerging research on my own clinical anecdotes, this is untrue.

People with “MTD” can have:
- symptoms of hypermobility
- signs of reflux
- non specific pain
- functional voice loss
- guarding responses
- fatigue
- inconsistency
(As well as tension)

So what are we supposing when we call it MTD? A catch all diagnosis where other specific avenues haven’t been properly examined? Maybe.

Have a good one,
Stephen 🧡

“Patient failed speech therapy”. C’mon people, we can do better!

It takes a great deal of courage to change. There are lots of variables which determine how successful, and how meaningful our change is in any therapy.

As an interdisciplinary practitioner using a combination of vocal massage, vocal rehab, and body psychotherapy, I have lots of routes in to a healing process with a person. But, even one of these modalities can be incredibly meaningful if the context is right.

I think that often we fail our patients, rather than our patient failing the modality by not effectively communicating the vast amount of variables at play when it comes to healing.

SWALLOWING BOILED SWEETS

Have you ever had that thing where you swallow a boiled sweet, and it gets “stuck” at the bottom of your throat?

There’s a real anatomical explanation for this, because the movement of the swallowing mechanism is very muscular until it isn’t. When the food or liquid is swallowed through the mouth and throat, before it gets to the area of the chest, we have dedicated anatomy to shift it. As soon as it gets to the oesophagus, we only have gravity and what’s called peristaltic motion.

Running, thinking- the clip is a bit of a gimmick to make a point.

I’m working with an artist at the moment and when they are performing to crowds of 50,60,70 thousand people their body is anything but CALM. So, how do we work with the body and the natural responses, how do we harness the work of stillness and make it MOVE.

Lots of thoughts.

It you want to come and learn something of this way of thinking, I’m teaching this philosophy on the in the clinic next year.

Recently, I was called away to do some on-site vocal rescue at an opera house and it got me thinking...

As I was in the back of the taxi, bag in hand with guaze, nitrile gloves, some acupuncture needles (just in case!) and my antibac I started to think about what an amazing resource ‘vocal massage’ can be. Aside from an 11 second recording of the person I was to be working with, I had very little information. It was therefore up to me to (in one hour!) assess the function, plan a treatment, deliver the treatment and provide follow up/ exercises.

Because of my knowledge of functional anatomy and my adherance to the EQUATION framework which I teach on the trainings, I was able to understand what part of the system seemed to be unbalanced. Through understanding the feedback from the person in the room and combining it with my experience, we were able to do a very accurate, very useful treatment in very little time.

We can use vocal massage as an immediate intervention… “I’m on in 6 hours!”

We can use vocal massage as an intermediate intervention… “I need to address the tension holding me back for this tour.”

Or we can use vocal massage as an ongoing meditative intervention… “I do this work so I can keep my voice in check, working well.”

All of these intervention concepts are different philosophically, and hold a different contract between the practitioner and client, but can be equally as effective at modifying the symptoms.

If you think differently and want to learn to do vocal massage…
I’ve got a few ways in which you can learn vocal massage coming up. As ever, you can learn with us online or in-person.

And for those of you who have already qualified, consider joining in the ongoing CPD group I run, with personal supervision, monthly seminars and other amazing practitioners to connect and relate with.
