SPF measures a sunscreen’s ability to help shield skin from UVB rays: the rays most associated with sunburn. In simple terms, SPF 25 means it would take around 25 times longer for skin to redden than it would without protection.⁠
⁠
And while higher numbers can sound significantly stronger, the difference is often smaller than people realise. SPF 25 filters out approximately 96% of UVB rays, while SPF 35 filters around 97%.⁠
⁠
The key factor? Reapplication.⁠
⁠
Sunscreens naturally degrade with UV exposure, sweat and rubbing, which is why applying generously and reapplying every 2-3 hours is essential to maintaining protection.⁠
