The Modern King and Queen of Sintra
Last week I visited Sintra and the famous Pena Palace — ruled by a king who loved an opera singer so deeply he built her an art house in nature. King Ferdinand II didn't follow convention. He followed his heart.
Walking down the hill, through the narrow, crowded streets, something pulled me into a small space called Casa Nielsen. Art and coffee. I stepped inside and felt it immediately. The depth. The presence. Something alive in the work on the walls.
That's where I met Anderson and Mariana.
Both from Brazil. Friends since childhood. Life moved them apart — and 28 years later, they found each other again at Anderson's exhibition in Brazil. This time they felt it deeply— it was love. Art brought them together, the same way it brought Ferdinand and Elise together centuries before. Mariana left her life in Brazil to walk alongside Anderson his path in Portugal.
Anderson is a photographer. But this word is too small for what he does. He has a passion for life and an eye for the beauty most people walk past without noticing.
What struck me most was a single moment he shared. Twenty years ago, his father passed away. Anderson stood at a crossroad and asked himself a brave question that changed everything for him: What do I want to leave behind?
He went back to his childhood. To the insects he played with as a boy. His father had shown him how to love nature — and in his later years, his father chose to live simply, in the middle of a forest. He followed what mattered to him the most — freedom. Anderson sold his car to buy a camera. That was the beginning of his new life.
Now Anderson is living his passion. The connections keep unfolding. Collaborations. Invitations. A growing global impact. Not because he chased it. Because he chose courage over comfort and followed what was true for him. He said – My father would be proud of me.
There is a part in us that knows exactly what we came here to do. Most of us wait for permission, for the right moment, for the money to be there first. Anderson sold his car.
What are you waiting for - to start your life in freedom.
