Preparing for the UCAT? Avoid these common pitfalls 👇
Here are 5 mistakes that can hold you back (and how to fix them):
🚫 Forgetting how to use the whiteboard effectively
The whiteboard can be a huge asset for calculations and diagrams, but overusing it wastes time. Use it strategically and rely on mental maths where you can to stay efficient.
❌ Leaving answers blank
There’s no negative marking, so skipping questions guarantees zero marks. Even a quick guess gives you a chance of picking up extra points, especially at the end of a section.
😰 Panicking during the test
It’s normal to hit tough questions, but letting nerves take over can derail your whole performance. Stay calm, flag difficult items, and come back later with a clear head.
🪤 Falling for common question “tricks”
UCAT questions are designed to catch you out (e.g. contradictions in verbal reasoning). Reading carefully and practising these patterns is key to avoiding easy mistakes.
🤒 Sitting the test when you’re unwell
You only get one attempt per year, so don’t risk it if you’re not at your best. Rescheduling can make a big difference to your final score.
