๐ŸŒฟ As a movement expert and nervous system educator I am well aware of the impact of rest and recovery on our health.
Having a toddler who still wakes up often at night and passes me all sort of viruses from nursery is definitely an important factor to consider when it comes to my energy levels.

But a couple of weeks ago I decided to finally book a blood test (my last one was during pregnancy) to figure out if thereโ€™s more behind my constant exhaustion than just poor sleep.

So I went to Canary Wharf to take their test checking for more than 40 markers.

I have to admit, I am still not particularly comfortable around needles, but the test was actually really quick, and the team was lovely and open to answer all my questions.
The clinic is so much nicer and cosier than the ones I have been before, so the experience was more relaxing than I expected.

The results came back quickly. It turns out, everything is fine, but it seems like my hormones are a bit all over the place, and perimenopause might be closer than I thought.
Great to have some answers and to know what to focus on from now on to welcome the next chapter ๐Ÿ’ช

๐ŸŒฟ This is one of my favourite ways to ground and loosen up my joints even when my energy is low.
This is also how I often start my private sessions or Transformative Movement practices, by combining twists, rolls and tilts that create spaciousness in the spine and an amazing sensation of calm and centredness.

A Somatic approach to Pilates and movement in general invites you to slow down, tune inward and come home to yourself.
It still gives you strength and flexibility, but at the same time truly works with your nervous system making you feel safer and in the best possible relationship with your body.

Now that Iโ€™m constantly carrying my little one (11 Kgs), sometimes a pram, bags and basically my whole life in my arms, upper body strength isnโ€™t optional anymore.
With less time and less free time, I train smarter combining full range movements with isometric holds to build strength and control that actually translates to my everyday life.
I also move in different planes and balance my spine with core stability drills.๐Ÿ’ช

๐ŸฉฐI grew up thinking the only way to become more flexible and beat stiffness was stretching more often or pushing harder in the poses.
What I have learned as a student and teacher through the years is something different.

Take our back as an example (which has always felt like a piece of steel to me). Our spine is rarely โ€œtightโ€ in isolation, it also responds to how our nervous system is organising tension across the body.
If our nervous system feels under pressure or threatened, even unconsciously, it stabilises and protects by holding and gripping.

That is why very dynamic, effort-based movements are great for many different reasons, but on the flip side often reinforce the same habitual patterns of tension we might want to get rid of.

๐ŸŒฟ Somatic Pilates (and any practice with a somatic approach) takes a different route.
By slowing things down and bringing attention to your internal sensation, you give your brain new information, which allows it to update how much effort is truly needed to hold you upright or to perform a specific movement.

๐Ÿ˜Š Over time, you can feel less compression through your spine, much more efficient core support, more ease in everyday movements and even better breathing.
