I have a particular specialism (not to mention keen interest) in reversing the negative long- term effects of stress, and how that impacts on establishing and maintain optimal health with individuals from all walks of life, including business executives, those experiencing long-term or chronic illness and disease, and high-performing athletes. Part of the UK’s founding group of Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, as accredited by the National Strength and Conditioning Association of America, 2002. Youngest ever recipient of a ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award from the Register for Exercise Professionals, 2003. A large majority of clients come to me having been unsuccessful pursuing conventional medical treatments and who are looking for a science-based, cutting edge approach to health care. In 2004 graduated from the Institute for Functional Medicine in Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice. In 2013 was in the first cohort group (worldwide) to be awarded Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner status. Considered by the Institute for Functional Medicine as a Clinical Innovator. In 2016 Completed Bredesen Training for treating cognitive decline at Buck Institute California. I am part of a collaborative clinician group in the UK delivering this comprehensive personalised programme to help increase cognition and reverse cognitive decline.

I've had COVID for the 3rd time and whilst you make yourself as healthy as possible this does not mean that you cannot recatch it again. You hope however being as healthy as possible reduces its impact.

As part of understanding my individual health, I've done many gene tests around what type of immune response I have to infection and it shows I have a hyperaggressive immune response.

This usually means 2-3 days feeling rotten in bed and then, if helped by a few things a quick return to normal. However, it also means that my immune response comes with a caveat. It may not want to turn the aggressive inflammatory response down once it has conquered and may increase what we call the cytokine storm.

So the use of anti-inflammatory nutrients such as Curcumin, Quercetin, Vitamin D, and Omega 3 fatty acids (in therapeutic doses) are important mediators in telling these overly aggressive genes to finish the fight and calm down. Hence why I will use them until I feel better.

Oral health has a big impact on the risk of brain decline, dementia and Alzheimer’s so it’s vital to at least be having regular dental and hygienist visits as this can save your brain and body in the long term.

As periodontal (gum) disease can be silent, we need to be aware of the importance of checking on our gum health. Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease and should not be ignored. Bleeding gums, receding gums and lots of plaque increases the risk of pathogenic oral bacteria slipping into the body and exaggerating chronic disease development by stimulating the immune system and creating systemic inflammation. These diseases can range from increasing Alzheimer’s risk to breast cancer. In midlife, many of us may have quite advanced periodontal disease so it's really important to get on top of your oral health.

Tips to help

- On a daily basis, you should clean your teeth for 2 minutes twice a day, ideally using an electric toothbrush.

- Focus on cleaning in between the teeth. Use floss or interdentals regularly.

- Change your diet to have more of a rainbow of colors. This increases phytochemicals that help reduce your gum disease risk.

- Get your oral bacteria tested if you can.

- Get your oral genetics tested if you want to get a fuller picture.

Excessive inflammation is a key underlying mechanism of almost all chronic disease. Working to understand in more detail (genes and lifestyle) can provide a more personalised and targeted approach to reducing inflammation and therefore helping to resolve a major mechanism in disease progression. Gum disease is one such disease that causes both a local and systemic inflammatory effect on the body. If you control gum disease this reduces some of the root cause inflammatory effects on diseases such as T2D Alzheimer’s and Obesity.

I’m delighted to share that I’m featured in the December 22 issue of IHCAN magazine (Integrative Health and Applied Nutrition). This extended five-page feature, ‘Bad Mouth, Bad Brain,’ is a deep dive into the link between poor oral health and the increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. It makes very interesting reading, looking at the breakthrough studies confirming the link between gum disease and Alzheimer's. A huge thanks to for the collaboration.

Did you know spending more time in a sauna can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's? Alzheimer's is a disease that we are beginning to look at very differently from how we did two decades ago. We are moving to an arena where we may be able to cure it or at least slow down the process. It's all about a personalised approach. Feel free to get in touch to find out more.

We all understand pain to be rather unpleasant, yet feeling pain I’d important in order to make sense of our surroundings and ultimately survive. A number of experts within the field of pain and pain management state that pain is a cleverly concocted illusion produced by the master illusionist itself, the brain. Our brain does this in order to protect us from further harm.

Our brain looks at information and decided what the best and most appropriate response should be in order to help us. Information that is potentially harmful is transmitted by these neurons through a process called nociception. Ultimately it’s your brain that decides 100% of the time whether you feel pain or not.

Dentistry and oral health can no longer be seen as a separate entity from the rest of our health, simply because the evidence showing the impact that poor oral health has on systemic health is so profound.
