17/04/2026

Sinusitis (or rhinosinusitis) is a common condition caused by inflammation of the sinuses, often alongside nasal inflammation. Typical symptoms include nasal blockage or discharge, facial pressure or pain, and a reduced sense of smell.

🔹 Acute sinusitis lasts less than 12 weeks and often follows a cold
🔹 Chronic sinusitis persists beyond 12 weeks and may be linked to underlying conditions like nasal polyps

🔍 How is it diagnosed and treated?

Healthy sinus function depends on open drainage pathways, effective mucus clearance, and a well-regulated immune system. Specialists assess these through detailed evaluation, including nasal endoscopy, imaging (such as CT scans), and allergy or blood testing where needed.

Symptoms are graded by severity to guide treatment, which is often medical and tailored to the underlying cause. Seeing a specialist ensures an accurate diagnosis and a personalised treatment plan based on the latest evidence.

If you’re experiencing persistent nasal symptoms, they could be a sign of acute or chronic rhinosinusitis, both of which require proper diagnosis and personalised treatment.
