2020 has been many years in one.

It’s asked us to reframe how we live, how we love, and how we let go. Letting go, acceptance, surrender - are some of our truest strengths, supported by patience and resiliency. And we’ve all had to embrace this in 2020.

What thankfully seems like a lifetime ago now, my year began with massive uncertainty even before the pandemic started.

What I remember most from then are the moments of surrender. Where I softened into putting one foot in front of the other. Surrender doesn’t mean you must agree, it means allowing it to be as it is and ceasing to resist. We sometimes call this going with the flow. And whilst there are times we are called to fight with everything we have, there are yet others we can release our grip on and allow them to be.

This quote lives on a scroll on our wall. It is one of my greatest learnings of the year that was too many years in one to count. Perhaps you’ll consider it on this powerful total solar eclipse new moon in Sagittarius.

Open your heart to the possibility of hope.

It exists.

Just like the sun on a cloudy day:
It may not be visible, but we know it’s there.

The sun is always shining even when we can’t see it.

This right here has been my tool to connect with the teenagers I’ve been teaching yoga to at a local school. They were hesitant at first to engage with yoga but super curious about essential oils! Swipe to see a sweet note left for me 💗 they started this bubble board after we practiced gratitude a few weeks ago.

Each week the first question I get when I walk in the door is what oil did you bring (they also love my Tibetan singing bowl!). I’m currently creating small personalized blends to leave them with at our last class tomorrow to use in visualization meditation - some of the words they want to amplify more in their lives are success, happiness, and gratitude, so the oils support this.

We eventually found the yoga poses that felt safe, and they have a sequence we’ve created together to practice on their own. It took some gentle patience, but we got there!

In class this morning I started with the contemplation: our mind is like the ocean, our thoughts like waves. The postures that followed weren’t too complicated, mostly familiar to someone who practices the physical yoga regularly. In the simplicity throughout class I encouraged awareness to the size and quality of the waves in the ocean, the thoughts in the mind. Listening intuitively to the sensations in the body by tuning into the mind.

Today, this was savasana perfection. Taken from The Book of Awakening reading for December 8. It’s a beautiful book for guidance whenever you’re seeking.

Why I Yoga:
Because it helps me feel into my physical body.
Because it guides me to connect with spirit.
Because it encourages me to use my breath to find stability.
Because it inspires me to focus on what’s most important right now.
Because it provides me clarity to see things that before were hidden.
Because it supports me through all the most challenging experiences in this life.
Because it teaches me to expand when I want to contract.
Because it shows me my own strength when I can’t feel it.
Because it carries me home.
Because it reminds me.

“Look deep into nature and you will understand everything better.” ― Albert Einstein

We can easily realize perspective in the rising shadow of Mount Everest and the thin yet powerful breath of nature as the swirling wind at her base camp. The expansiveness of nature and minuteness of a human body is experienced at once. The Tibetans call her Chomolonga, Mother Goddess of the World.

A haiku for Mother Goddess of the World

I was called to her
To feel her power pulsing
It changed me forever

Yesterday in my 10 Minute Reset I guided us through a simple metta meditation. It is a practice of concentration, focusing on a particular object of meditation which in this case is the metta phrase. We offer lovingkindness always to ourselves first, and expand the practice from there to ultimately include all beings everywhere without a particular distinction.

This practice is extra important today as we are all in this covid crisis together. Four or five years ago I went to a meditation with the Metta Queen and she told a story about a women who had been going thru a really challenging time alone but what got her through was knowing that there were people somewhere in the world practicing metta, and therefore wishing her peace. The power of the practice took on new meaning.

For your self practice:

May I be happy
May I be healthy
May I feel safe
May my heart be at ease

May you be happy
May you be healthy
May you feel safe
May your heart be at ease

May all beings everywhere be happy
May all beings everywhere be health
May all beings everywhere feel safe
May all beings everywhere have ease of heart

Five years ago I spent five months in a little known Chinese city of about 10 million people teaching nursing students. That city was Wuhan. Back then, and even six months ago, very few people had heard of it. Now it’s known around the world.

It wasn’t easy - communication was a struggle and isolation a reality. If you’ve read Eat, Pray, Love, I had my bathroom floor come to Jesus moment on the carpet of my living room in Wuhan. Kind of same same, but different - it brought me to a crossroads.

I had two choices: to pack up and go home, or complete my assignment and get creative in supporting myself. I choose the latter, and my life has never been the same.

Funny enough, the lessons that seeded themselves there in Wuhan helped prepare me for the challenges we are facing right now. The practices I dove deeper into there are the same practices I lean into now for support.

My offering to you in these times is this: Join me here daily at 11am EST/4pm BST for a 10 minute practice. We’ll ground and then energize - no yoga or meditation practice required, no mat or props necessary! Come as you are. DM with any questions or specific requests.

See you here soonest 🙏🏼
