We’re consulting on our proposals for a new, streamlined one‑year registration route for internationally‑qualified pharmacists trained outside the European Economic Area, EFTA countries and Switzerland.

The proposals would replace the current two‑year route with an integrated programme combining academic learning and learning in practice, focused on pharmacy practice in Great Britain. They include independent prescribing from initial registration, recognition of relevant prior learning and experience, and continued assessment through the Common Registration Assessment.

The proposed approach reflects that applicants are already qualified pharmacists, reduces unnecessary duplication, and lowers time and cost barriers, while maintaining standards and public protection.

By enabling internationally-qualified pharmacists to enter the workforce sooner and prescribe from day one, we aim to support a sustainable pharmacy workforce and improve patient care.
Deadline for responses is 21 July 2026.

We look forward to hearing your views as part of the consultation.
