The U.S. FDA has approved a new indication for tirzepatide (Mounjaro) to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in adult patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.
Rather than a standard placebo trial, the landmark SURPASS-CVOT study tested Mounjaro head-to-head against an active, proven cardiovascular drug (dulaglutide) in over 13,000 patients.
The Scientific Findings:
- Cardioprotection: Mounjaro delivered an 8% lower rate of major cardiac events than the active control.
- Survival Benefit: The data showed a 16% reduction in all-cause mortality.
- Mechanism: Proves that dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor activation provides systemic macrovascular benefits alongside glucose regulation.
