We’d like to warmly invite you to this year’s Zenways Family Gathering - a weekend of community, connection and friendship. We use ‘family’ in double-meaning: those in the Zenways community (or those thinking of joining our community 🫵), and also family to mean your family - this event is open to spouses, relations and kids 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒.

A virtual tour around our dojo as it has been this week full of hanging scrolls by our late teacher Shinzan Roshi. (We did the pack down yesterday so all back to normal now.)

What a blast it’s been! A week of wonderful events, meeting old and new friends, and remembering our inspirational teacher Shinzan Roshi. Long may his teaching continue to inspire into the future.

Our wonderful Zen brushwork teacher Noriko Yamasaki ran a workshop last night around Shinzan’s inspiring calligraphy of “what is this?” 是何ぞ (kore nanzo).

Through meditation, bodywork and intention, she guided us to each express our own versions on “what is this?”

Some views from our memorial ceremony for our late teacher Shinzan Roshi yesterday at our London dojo. Thanks to all who attended in person (possibly the fullest our dojo has ever been) and online.

And massive thanks to all that contributed physically, emotionally, energetically and intentionally.

May his teachings live on, and bring an end to suffering wherever it exists.

Join us on Sunday for a memorial ceremony in honour of our late teacher Shinzan Roshi, who died 5 years ago. Next week we’ll be celebrating his life and teaching with a series of free events, each one a doorway to meet the essence of a teacher who was fearless, generous and awake.

In Zen, the memorial of a teacher is not only a remembrance. It is an encounter. Within the ceremony there will be a period of silent sanzen, a simple opportunity to meet the master directly, beyond life, beyond death. Please come and join us in this encounter!

We invite everybody attending in person to bring a vegetarian dish to share for a bring and share supper after the ceremony.

Pilgrims chant mantra for Shinzan Roshi.

Daizan Roshi introduces a mantra to honour our late teacher Shinzan Roshi and records him and the group in Japan chanting it with taiko drum. This recording was sent to our group of pilgrims currently walking the Thames River Path from source to London, walking in remembrance of Shinzan Roshi. Today, 31st May 2026, they’re on day 5 of 11.
