Today marks nine years since 72 people tragically lost their lives at Grenfell Tower.

On the night of the Grenfell Tower fire, almost half of the building’s Disabled residents lost their lives – 15 out of 37 people. They were trapped in a burning building with no safe way to escape.

Successive governments promised they would not ignore the lessons of Grenfell. They promised Deaf and Disabled people that we would never again be trapped in our homes, unable to escape from a fire.

Yet nine years on, Disabled people are no safer than we were on 14th June 2017.
The Government's new Residential Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (RPEEP) regulations, which came into force in April this year, do not make Disabled people safer.

Today, our right to support in an emergency – and even our chance of survival – can depend on how understanding our landlord is, how tall our building is, or how much it costs to provide the equipment we need to escape.

Building owners and managers are not automatically required to provide evacuation equipment, such as evacuation chairs, if they decide it's not reasonable to do so. Disabled people can still be told that their survival is too expensive.
The Government must act now and strengthen these regulations to prevent another Grenfell and stop more Disabled people from dying.

Remembering Grenfell must mean more than words. It must mean action. It must mean ensuring that no Disabled person is ever again left trapped and unable to escape from a fire.

We spoke to Disability News Service about the recent Supreme Court ruling on Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and what they mean for Disabled people:

“We are deeply concerned about the Supreme Court ruling on Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards as it will lead to many more people with learning difficulties and autistic people being deprived of their freedoms based on disability alone."

“We are deeply concerned that the judgement will allow for increased restraints and restrictions to continue [and for] people with learning difficulties and autistic people to be abused and to be locked up forever regardless."
