Our new campaign to tackle media hostility towards Disabled people has been featured by Disability News Service.

Louise Holden, senior policy officer at Inclusion London, said this week: “The way disabled people are represented in the media matters.

“One story on its own can be dismissed, but when the same harmful narratives appear again and again they reveal a pattern of prejudice that has real consequences for disabled people’s lives.

“Disability Media Action will help us build the evidence needed to challenge damaging coverage, hold media organisations to account and make disablism unprofitable.”

"Progress at last on disability hate crime, but prosecution figures still fail to reflect daily experience of hostility", reports Disability News Service.

Louise Holden, our senior policy officer for disabled people and crime, said: “The figures do not reflect the daily experience of many disabled people.

“Being harassed, abused and targeted needs to be met with justice and these low numbers show how much work still needs to happen to get that justice.”

They added: “For many years now, disabled victims and survivors who are brave enough to report to the police feel let down, because many cases are not prosecuted.

“The cases don’t get to the CPS and it is unclear why.

“With confidence in the police so low in our community, we need to see more cases getting to court and victims getting justice.

“We need to be involved in the Met’s work on hate crime against disabled people so they understand our community and how to support us better.

“Every case that gets dropped means there’s someone suffering alone and without support and that is unacceptable.”

There are growing signs of a DWP push to claim that conditions like ADHD, autism, anxiety and depression are less likely to lead to significant additional costs and, therefore, should be treated differently by the benefits system.

In order to challenge this argument, Benefits and Work want to hear about the extra costs you face if you live with one of these conditions, or care for someone who does.

The Fonagy Review into mental health conditions, ADHD and autism has found that “the rise in mental health problems is real, is affecting everyday functioning" and "we cannot conclude that overdiagnosis is occurring at scale”.

Yet from recent headlines about the review, you'd think the opposite was true. The media must be held accountable for spreading misinformation that drives disability hate, particularly targeting young Disabled people.

Disablism in the media feeds hostility and hate crime against Disabled people. It's got to stop.

This National Hate Crime Awareness Week, we're launching Disability Media Action.

Our new initiative will hold those in the media who spread disablism accountable. Inspired by the organisation Stop Funding Hate, our plan has three stages: monitor, expose, change.

1. Monitor

We have launched an online form, through which people can send us any media coverage which concerns them, and any adverts which appeared alongside it.

2. Expose

We will bring together the evidence gathered, building up a pattern of evidence that cannot be dismissed.

3. Change

We will use our evidence base to put pressure on advertisers to stop funding media outlets who spread disablism.

Media organisations have the power to influence how disability is understood and discussed. Advertisers have choices about the media they fund, and Disabled people have the power to document what is happening and demand change.

There is no such thing as "too young to be Disabled."

Cuts to the Universal Credit health element for under 25s would only push young Disabled people who can't work further into poverty.

The proposals we’ve heard from the government so far are all about pushing young Disabled people into a work environment that even Milburn acknowledges is challenging and inaccessible.

Instead, we want to see structural changes in the employment market, including an increase in good quality flexible jobs and the enforcement of employers’ existing legal duty to make reasonable adjustments.

If the government were serious about supporting young Disabled people into work they would properly fund the Access to Work scheme, which provides adjustments that are beyond what is expected of employers. Instead they are currently cutting Access to Work packages and forcing young Disabled people out of their jobs.
