👉Most swollen lymph nodes are nothing to worry about.

They often appear when your immune system is fighting a common infection such as a cold, sore throat or dental infection.

However, some swollen lymph nodes should be assessed by a GP, especially if they:

• remain swollen for several weeks
• continue to increase in size
• appear without an obvious cause
• are associated with persistent fever, night sweats or unexplained weight loss

A swollen lymph node is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The important step is understanding why it has appeared, rather than assuming the worst.

If you’re unsure whether your symptoms need medical attention, a GP assessment can help determine whether reassurance, monitoring or further investigations are appropriate.

📍 Concerned about a swollen lymph node? Our experienced Private GPs in Richmond can assess your symptoms, explain what may be causing them and advise if any further tests are needed.

👉Feeling dizzy or lightheaded?
An occasional episode can have a simple explanation, but recurring symptoms may be worth discussing with a doctor.

💡 Dizziness can mean different things to different people.

You may experience:

• a spinning sensation or vertigo
• feeling unsteady or off balance
• lightheadedness or feeling faint
• nausea associated with movement

There are many possible causes.

These can include inner-ear problems, dehydration, changes in blood pressure, medication side effects and other medical conditions.

That is why there is no single test that is appropriate for everyone.

👩‍⚕️ At Evergreen Richmond Medical, we start with a structured clinical assessment.

Depending on your symptoms, this may include:

• understanding when and how the dizziness occurs
• reviewing associated symptoms
• checking blood pressure and relevant clinical observations
• reviewing current medication
• deciding whether tests or further assessment are appropriate

🚨 Some symptoms need urgent medical attention.

Seek urgent help if sudden dizziness occurs with symptoms such as difficulty speaking, weakness or numbness on one side, loss of consciousness or a new severe headache.

Your nails can sometimes reveal more about your health than you might expect. 💅

Although many nail changes are completely harmless, some can provide useful clues about your health — while others may be caused by conditions affecting the nail itself.

Here are a few examples:

🔹 Pale nails may sometimes be associated with iron deficiency or anaemia.

🔹 Yellow nails can be linked to fungal infections, smoking, nail products or other conditions affecting the nails.

🔹 White spots are usually caused by minor nail injuries — not by a lack of calcium, as many people believe.

🔹 Spoon-shaped nails, known as koilonychia, can sometimes be associated with iron deficiency.

🔹 Dark lines or new pigmentation should be professionally assessed, particularly when they are new, changing or appear without an obvious injury.

The important thing to remember is this:

A nail change alone cannot diagnose a medical condition.

However, if a change is new, persistent, changing or unexplained, it is worth having it professionally assessed.

At Evergreen Richmond Medical, our specialist Dermatology service includes expert assessment of nail conditions, helping identify the possible cause and recommend the appropriate next steps, investigations or treatment where needed.

🤨What Does Your Cholesterol Result Actually Mean?

Have you ever looked at your cholesterol results and wondered what the numbers actually mean?

Many people focus on whether their cholesterol is simply “high” or “low”, but interpreting your results is rarely that straightforward.

A standard cholesterol blood test usually includes:

🩸 Total cholesterol – an overall measure of cholesterol in your blood.

🩸 LDL (“bad”) cholesterol – higher levels may increase the risk of fatty deposits building up in your arteries over time.

🩸 HDL (“good”) cholesterol – helps remove excess cholesterol from your bloodstream and is generally considered protective.

🩸 Triglycerides – another type of fat in the blood that can be influenced by diet, weight, alcohol intake and certain medical conditions.

However, these numbers should never be interpreted in isolation.

When assessing your cardiovascular health, a GP will also consider factors such as your age, blood pressure, smoking status, diabetes, family history and overall lifestyle.

This means that two people with identical cholesterol results may have very different levels of cardiovascular risk.

It’s also important to remember that raised cholesterol usually doesn’t cause symptoms, which is why routine health checks can play an important role in identifying potential risks before problems develop.

At Evergreen Richmond Medical, our experienced GPs can review your cholesterol results, explain what they mean in the context of your overall health, and advise whether lifestyle changes, further investigations or treatment may be appropriate.

Whether you need a private cholesterol blood test, a cardiovascular health check, or simply want professional advice about your results, we’re here to help.

🩺 OVER 40?

Not Everyone Needs The Same Checks

Many people assume that turning 40 automatically means booking a long list of medical tests.

In reality, health checks should be based on the individual, not simply on age.

Factors that may influence which assessments are appropriate include:

✔️ Personal medical history

✔️ Family history

✔️ Lifestyle

✔️ Existing health conditions

✔️ Current symptoms and concerns

Depending on the situation, it may be appropriate to review areas such as:

• Blood pressure

• Cholesterol

• Blood sugar levels

• Cardiovascular health

• Weight and metabolic health

• Hormonal health

• Vitamin and mineral status

The goal is not necessarily to do more tests.

The goal is to focus on the checks that are most relevant to your health profile.

At Evergreen Richmond Medical, we believe that preventive healthcare should be personalised, evidence-based and tailored to the individual.

👨‍⚕️ WHICH DOCTOR SHOULD YOU SEE?

It Depends On Your Symptoms

Many people know they want help.

What they are not always sure about is where to start.

Should you book a GP appointment?

Do you need a specialist?

Would blood tests be helpful?

The answer often depends on your symptoms, medical history and overall health.

For example:

✔️ Ongoing fatigue may require a broader medical assessment

✔️ Hormonal symptoms may benefit from blood testing and further evaluation

✔️ Digestive concerns can have many possible causes

✔️ Changes in weight, energy or wellbeing may require a personalised approach

The right next step is not always obvious.

This is why an initial medical assessment can often help clarify which investigations or referrals may be appropriate.

At Evergreen Richmond Medical, we help patients understand their symptoms, explore appropriate investigations and make informed decisions about their health.

IRON, FERRITIN OR VITAMINS?

The Right Tests Matter

Feeling tired all the time does not always mean the same thing.

In some cases, symptoms such as low energy, brain fog, weakness or hair loss may be linked to iron levels, ferritin, vitamin deficiencies or other health factors.

However, blood tests are not one size fits all.

The most appropriate investigations can vary depending on your symptoms, lifestyle, medical history and overall health.

At Evergreen Richmond Medical, we offer private blood testing with access to:
✔️ Iron & Anaemia Profiles
✔️ Vitamins & Minerals
✔️ Thyroid Testing
✔️ Hormonal Health Panels
✔️ General Health Screens

Patients can also book a GP consultation before or after testing for clearer medical guidance and interpretation.

🩸 Which Blood Tests May Actually Make Sense For You?

Many people book “full blood tests” without knowing which investigations may actually be relevant to their symptoms or health concerns.

But blood tests are not one size fits all.

Symptoms, lifestyle, medical history and age can completely change which tests may be worth considering.

In some cases, it may be useful to assess:
✔️ iron and anaemia
✔️ vitamin D
✔️ thyroid function
✔️ cholesterol and glucose
✔️ hormonal health
✔️ vitamins and minerals

At Evergreen Richmond Medical, we offer a wide range of private blood tests and health profiles, with the option to speak with a GP before or after testing for clearer guidance.

Blood testing appointments are available Monday to Friday at our Richmond clinic with fast access and trusted lab partners.
