New research introduces a more advanced way of analysing lung function decline alongside mortality offering a clearer, less biased picture of disease progression and treatment impact. This could play an important role in improving the design and accuracy of future clinical trials.

We’re proud that consultants at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals contributed to this work, continuing to drive innovation in respiratory research.

Contributing consultants:
Professor Athol Wells, Professor Toby Maher, Professor Gisli Jenkins, Mr Iain Stewart, Professor Surinder Birring, Mr Joseph Jacob, Mrs Wendy Adams.

Today is World Asthma Day - an opportunity to focus on understanding and managing a condition affecting around 7.2 million people in the UK.

Asthma is a long-term condition of the airways, which can cause symptoms such as breathlessness, wheeze and coughing. While it can’t be cured, it can usually be well controlled with the right treatment and support.

Education plays a key role, helping people recognise symptoms, understand triggers and use inhalers correctly can significantly reduce the risk of flare-ups.

At Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, education is central to improving outcomes. We offer a range of specialist talks and resources through our education platform, supporting healthcare professionals to stay up to date with best practice in asthma care.

A British Heart Foundation red plaque at Harefield hospital now recognises the extraordinary contribution of Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub to cardiovascular medicine and his lasting impact on clinical education.

Installed at the hospital entrance, the plaque marks Harefield as a site of historic significance in the development of modern heart and lung care, as well as a centre for training and knowledge-sharing. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, Sir Magdi has helped shape the field, most notably in heart transplantation and the treatment of congenital heart disease.

At Harefield, he established the world’s largest heart and lung transplant programme, overseeing more than 2,500 transplants while contributing to the development of clinical expertise and standards adopted worldwide.

Now aged 90, he continues to lead research into biological heart valves capable of growing within the body, work that not only advances patient care, but also informs the education of future generations of clinicians.

His legacy continues to shape both clinical practice and the way cardiovascular medicine is taught and learned.

We’re pleased to share new research in fibrotic interstitial lung disease (ILD), exploring the link between imaging findings and underlying inflammation.

The study found that ground-glass opacity (GGO) on scans may not reliably reflect inflammation, while higher neutrophil levels were more strongly associated with fibrosis. These insights can help improve how clinicians interpret imaging and guide treatment decisions.

We’re proud that consultants at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals contributed to this important work, continuing to advance research in respiratory care.

Contributing consultants:
Professor Athol Wells, Professor Philip Molyneaux, Professor Andrew G Nicholson, Professor Anand Devaraj, Dr Elisabetta Renzoni, Dr Bhavin Rawal, Professor Sujal Desai, Professor Peter M George,Dr Maria Kokosi, Dr Alexandra Rice, Dr Felix Chua.

How can we make antiviral treatments more effective in future pandemics?

New research examining favipiravir in hospitalised COVID-19 patients highlights an important challenge: many patients did not reach optimal drug levels, which may impact how well the treatment works.

The study found that factors such as body weight, s*x, and liver function can influence how the drug is absorbed and processed, reinforcing the need for more personalised, data-driven dosing approaches in future care.

We’re proud that Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals consultants Dr Pallav Shah, Dr James Tonkin, Dr Francesca Conway, Dr Anand Tana and Dr Christopher Orton contributed to this work, helping to shape how we think about antiviral use and pandemic preparedness.

We’re proud to share the publication of the first international expert consensus on shape-sensing robotic-assisted bronchoscopy (ssRAB), an advanced technique used to assess lung nodules.

Bringing together 18 specialists from 13 hospitals across 3 continents, the group developed 38 clear recommendations to help guide clinicians on how to use this technology safely and effectively.

We’re especially pleased that Dr Pallav Shah, consultant at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, contributed to this global work and highlighting our continued commitment to leading research and innovation in respiratory care.

March marks Sleep Awareness Month, an important opportunity to highlight the critical role sleep plays in our overall health and wellbeing.

In our latest interview, Dr Shruthi Konda, sleep consultant, shares practical, evidence-based guidance on how small, consistent changes can lead to better quality sleep.

Some key recommendations include:
- avoiding caffeine and heavy meals later in the evening
- creating a sleep environment that is dark, quiet, and comfortable
- establishing a relaxing wind-down routine and reducing screen time before bed
- keeping a consistent sleep schedule, including weekends
- prioritising exposure to natural light during the day

Improving sleep is not just about rest, it is a fundamental component of long-term health.
