๐Ÿ’™ Diabetes Week is a reminder that diabetes is often misunderstood โ€” and too many people still face stigma and blame linked to diet or lifestyle.

Diabetes is a complex medical condition influenced by many factors, including genetics, age and the immune system. Not all types are linked to lifestyle, and reducing the conversation to blame can prevent people from seeking the support they need.

This week is about changing that narrative โ€” promoting understanding, respect and better awareness of what itโ€™s really like to live with diabetes.

Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and heard when accessing healthcare. Inclusive, compassionate care isnโ€™t an extra โ€” itโ€™s essential ๐Ÿ’™

Letโ€™s continue building services that recognise and support every identity, every voice, every experience.

โš ๏ธ Hospital doctors will be on strike from Monday 15 to Friday 19 June, and NHS services are asking patients to use the right care option during this period.

Hospitals will continue to provide urgent and emergency care, but some planned appointments and routine services may be affected or rearranged.

If you need medical help during this time:

๐Ÿš‘ Emergency or life-threatening situation: call 999 or go to A&E
๐Ÿฉบ If you are unwell: contact your GP practice
๐Ÿ’ป If you cannot reach your GP: use NHS 111 online
๐Ÿง  Mental health crisis: seek urgent help via NHS 111
๐Ÿ’Š Minor illnesses and advice: speak to your local pharmacy

Using the right service helps ensure emergency care is available for those who need it most.

๐Ÿ’™ Caring for someone can be one of the most important roles a person takes on โ€” but many carers still feel their contribution goes unseen.

This , the focus is on building communities where carers are recognised, supported and able to access help when they need it.

Many people don't realise they are carers. If you regularly help a family member, friend or neighbour who couldn't manage without your support, you may be entitled to advice, practical assistance and wellbeing support.

Taking time to identify and support carers benefits not only individuals and families, but the wider health and care system too.

Do you know someone who is a carer? Take a moment to thank them today. ๐Ÿ’™

Life-changing treatments for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) are now available long-term on the NHS ๐Ÿ’™

The therapies nusinersen and risdiplam can help improve movement, breathing and quality of life for children and young people living with SMA, offering families greater stability and certainty about ongoing care.

In Greenwich, families access assessment and treatment through GP referral into specialist NHS neuromuscular services ๐Ÿฅ

Adult social care services in Greenwich have been rated โ€œGoodโ€ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) ๐Ÿ‘

Inspectors highlighted strong support helping people stay independent, better hospital discharge support, and joined-up working across local health and care services.

The report also recognised the role community groups and carers play in supporting people across Greenwich โค๏ธ

Some areas still need improvement, including support for unpaid carers and making information more accessible for everyone.

In 2024, Healthwatch Greenwich published a report exploring the experiences of Black and ethnic minority carers in Greenwich. We are pleased to see the Royal Borough of Greenwich take a positive and proactive approach in responding to the report's findings and recommendations including...

โ€ข A new co-produced carers' guide with improved multilingual information.

โ€ข Greater engagement with Black and Global Majority carers through community-based approaches and co-production.

โ€ข Increased focus on carers' rights, benefits, and financial support.

โ€ข The establishment of a Carers Partnership Board, creating new opportunities for carers to influence services and strategy.

โ€ข Development of a new all-age carers strategy.

These developments demonstrate the value of listening to carers, acting on lived experience, and working collaboratively across organisations and communities to improve support for local people.

We are grateful to the carers who shared their experiences, the co-researchers who helped deliver the project, and colleagues at the Royal Borough of Greenwich who have embraced the findings and used them to help shape future improvements.

Concerns about getting a GP appointment continue to rise, with many people delaying care because they expect long waits. Access to primary care has become one of the biggest pressures shaping everyday experiences of the NHS. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉบ

People want earlier support, clearer routes into services and a system that responds when health worries first appear. Strengthening these โ€œfront doorsโ€ to care is essential for preventing avoidable crises and helping communities stay well.

If you need help understanding or navigating local health services, several organisations can offer guidance, advice and practical support:

NHS 111 โ€“ for urgent medical concerns and advice

Greenwich GP Access Hubs โ€“ for evening and weekend GP appointments

Royal Borough of Greenwich Health & Wellbeing Services โ€“ for local support, information and community health resources

Healthwatch Greenwich โ€“ for sharing experiences of care and getting help finding the right service

These services can help you understand your options, access the right level of care, and get support when GP access feels difficult.

๐Ÿ’‰ Important improvements are underway for people living with sickle cell across South East London. New communityโ€‘based services, faster emergency pathways and personalised care plans are helping residents get safer, quicker and more compassionate support. For Greenwich communities โ€” where sickle cell affects many families โ€” these changes mean better access to specialist teams, reduced hospital delays and more joinedโ€‘up care shaped by lived experience.
