🎉✈️Mr Phil Tozer, St Mark's Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, is back from his Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Visiting Professorship at the internationally-renowned Cleveland Clinic!

🏥🔬During his visit, Mr Tozer presented new research and advances in the management of complex IBD to an international clinical audience. He delivered lectures on Crohn's disease, peria**l fistulas, and the impact of IBD and IBD surgery on s*x.

This visit was a fantastic opportunity for knowledge exchange between St Mark’s and the Cleveland Clinic. St Mark's Hospital Foundation is proud to support our clinical colleagues as they partner with scientists and laboratories throughout the UK and specialist hospitals from across the globe to make wide-reaching impacts in the lives of people with bowel disease. 💥💜

✈️🎉Mr Phil Tozer has arrived in Cleveland, Ohio!

We’re delighted to share that Mr Phil Tozer, Consultant Colorectal IBD Surgeon at St Mark’s Hospital, has arrived at the Cleveland Clinic as a Visiting Professor.

During his visit, Mr Tozer will be delivering a series of talks and sharing expertise with colleagues at this internationally renowned institution.

This is a fantastic opportunity for collaboration and knowledge exchange between St Mark’s and Cleveland Clinic. 🤝

🎤🎵 Bill, or Callycat as he is known in the recording studio, has been a patient of St Mark’s Hospital for 15 years and writes songs that capture his experience of living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

Bill has generously decided to donate some of the proceeds from his albums to support St Mark’s vision of a future free from the fear of bowel disease.

📖We are honoured to share some of Bill's story in his own words:

"Writing has always been easier for me than speaking. After stoma surgery many years ago, I wrote a poem about how I was feeling. Recently, while clearing out old papers, I found it again and turned it into a song ‘Inside Out’. That led to the release of two albums — Beautifully Broken and I Accept the Dark — both shaped by my experience of living with IBD.

When people asked if the music was available on CD, I made physical copies. Rather than selling them, I ask for a donation to St Mark’s Hospital Foundation. It feels like a small way of giving something back to the place that has given me so much."

🎨🎉The St Mark's Hospital Intestinal Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) proudly celebrated the 5th Patient Art Competition Awards ceremony through the HOPE project—Healing Opportunities through Patient Engagement—continuing its commitment to supporting patient wellbeing through meaningful and creative engagement.

🌷🪻This year's theme, 'Blooming Through Challenges', highlighted the resilience, creativity, and strength of the IRU patients through a heartfelt vase painting competition. Each artwork reflected personal journeys of hope, healing, courage, and growth, demonstrating the positive impact of creativity and compassionate care within the unit.

The celebration brought together patients and the entire IRU team, recognising the collective contribution of all staff who play a vital role in creating a supportive, inclusive, and empowering environment for patients. While the initiative is nurse-led, its success reflects the dedication, compassion, and teamwork of the entire IRU, and St Mark's Hospital, community. ❤️

The St Mark's Hospital IBD Advice Line is now supported by an online service. The new portal allows you to contact the team at a time that best suits you. The team will aim to review all flare-up and clinical queries within 1 working day and all medication and admin queries within 3 working days.

🔬Mr Theo Pelly is a St Mark's clinical research fellow pursuing a PhD in peria**l Crohn’s disease, a form of Crohn’s disease which causes inflammation around the a**s.

We are delighted to announce that his presentation on a new classification system for non-fistulising peria**l Crohn’s disease was recently shortlisted for the prestigious British Journal of Surgery Prize at the 2026 annual meeting of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland. 🎉🏆

Earlier this year, St Mark's Hospital Foundation was incredibly grateful to receive charitable funding to support Mr Pelly's work, allowing him and the rest of the Fistula Research Unit to develop the first ever Priority Setting Partnership focused on idiopathic a**l and vaginal fistulae in collaboration with the James Lind Alliance. This partnership brings patient voices to the forefront when setting research priorities for the future. 📢🗣️

✨Shaping colonoscopy care for people with Lynch syndrome✨

🔬St Mark's research fellow, Dr Stephanie Poo, and Consultant Gastroenterologist, Professor Kevin Monahan have launched a new UK-wide survey to understand the experiences of people with Lynch syndrome when having regular colonoscopy check-ups.

🩺People with Lynch syndrome have a higher risk of bowel cancer and are advised to have regular colonoscopies to help prevent or detect cancers early. While these check-ups are important, experiences of colonoscopy can vary across the country.

❤️By listening directly to patients, the team hopes to improve the quality, consistency and reach of colonoscopy services for people with Lynch syndrome across the UK.

The findings may help identify differences in care between regions, improve patient experience and encourage more people to attend potentially life-saving colonoscopy check-ups. 💪
