On World IBD Day last week, we were excited to welcome author, Ian Bain, to talk about his new book 'My life in the bathroom – memoir of an ulcerative colitis warrior'.

"I had lifesaving stoma surgery at Great Ormond Street in my teens, but I couldn't bring myself to accept it. I was anxious and mentally struggling. By creating my J-Pouch, St Mark's saved my sanity; I could suddenly see a future worth living.

Before the surgery, I felt isolated, lonely, and constantly fearful. I wanted someone to look up to who had been through the same thing—someone who could show me it would be okay.

I wrote my book initially for my teenage self, to give me the heroic figure I craved. But that wasn't enough; I want to ensure no one else has to go through their journey alone, and to help them feel they can be their own hero, too.

My donation to St Mark's is my thank you for giving me a fulfilling and wonderful life."

We are incredibly grateful to Ian for donating several copies of his book to St Mark's Hospital Foundation. The proceeds from their sale will go to support crucial research at St Mark's that will make a difference in the lives of individuals with complex, and rare, bowel diseases.

A huge thank you to the Red Lion Group, a J-pouch patient support group, for their recent £3,000 donation to support the work of St Mark's research fellow, Dr Orestis Argyriou. 🎉❤️

🩺🤝Orestis's work focuses on improving counselling for patients considering surgery for ulcerative colitis, one of the main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

Orestis shared, "We are deeply committed to making this work relevant to patients’ real lives. By providing not only stronger surgical evidence, but also better answers to the practical questions about what life after surgery may actually look like, we are helping people make truly informed decisions. We are dedicated to improving counselling, strengthening support, and ensuring that patients feel better informed, better prepared and better supported throughout their journey."

St Mark’s Hospital Foundation recently received a £3,000 donation from the members of The Red Lion Group, a patient support group for individuals who have had, or are considering J Pouch surgery. This incredibly generous donation is to support the research of Dr Orestis Argyriou, a St Mark’s re...

Randolph Masiglat’s commitment to patients’ pre and post-operative care now takes him into theatre as a trainee Robotic Surgery Surgical Care Practitioner at St Mark's Hopsital.

“I help set up and dock the robot and assist in various robotic colorectal procedures.

"It’s an interesting perspective as an advanced clinical practitioner as I get an in-depth understanding of the surgery and take part in procedures, such as closing the patient's wound after the robotic procedure is completed."

St Mark’s has been using a da Vinci robot for colorectal surgery since 2018 and is close to completing its 1000th robotic procedure.

📢Tuesday 19th May is World IBD Day 🌏💜

Currently, 1 in 120 people in the UK live with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Every year, World IBD Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of these chronic conditions, which affect millions of people worldwide. 🗣️

The IBD Patient Panel is a group of current and former St Mark's patients that help develop the hospital's IBD service by providing suggestions for improvement. This year, they will be hosting a stall at Central Middlesex Hospital to mark World IBD Day and raise funds to support research and education at St Mark's.

🗓️Stop by anytime between 10am and 3pm to meet the panel members, learn more about the impact of IBD, and hear about the range of IBD services available at St Mark's Hospital.

A huge thank you to year six student, Reem, and her mum, Ibi, for organising a bake sale at her school to raise money for St Mark's Hospital Foundation. 💜🧁

The daughter of a St Mark's gastroenterologist, Reem was already familiar with St Mark's Hospital when her best friend was recently diagnosed with IBD. To support her friend, increase awareness of IBD, and raise funds to support bowel disease research, Reem planned a bake sale at her school and gave a presentation on IBD to the student body.

Thanks to her hard work, and generous donations of baked goods from local businesses, she and her friends raised an amazing £395! 🎉
