Our spines are designed to move in six directions, and rotation is key to maintaining that full range of motion. Twisting hydrates the spinal discs, encourages circulation to the surrounding muscles, and helps decompress the vertebrae. Think of it as opening up space where things have compressed.
When you enter a deep twist, you gently compress the abdominal organs, temporarily restricting blood flow. The magic happens when you release: a fresh rush of oxygenated blood floods back into the digestive system and internal organs. It’s an incredible way to stimulate digestion and support the body’s natural elimination processes.
From a philosophical and energetic perspective, twists are highly balancing. They help shift stagnant energy (Prana) along the central channel (Sushumna Nadi). If you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed, a gentle twist helps ring out tension; if you are feeling lethargic, it can wake the system up.
🧘♀️ Practice Tip: Always prioritize length before depth. Inhale to find space and elongate the spine, and exhale to gently rotate from the navel up. Never force the shape and let the breath guide the depth.
