Don’t forget to apply for a place on the Student and Foundation Doctor Network (SFDN) committee. You have until Sunday 1 November 5pm to fill in the application form and send it, along with a 2-page CV, to [email protected].

As part of the SFDN you will have the chance to:

Today, RCP clinical lead for health inequalities and inclusion health Dr Pippa Medcalf represented the RCP at a No.10 summit on ending rough sleeping, bringing the clinical voice to discussions about how we can better support people experiencing homelessness.

In her new blog, Pippa explains why homelessness must be recognised as a health issue, and how the NHS can help through early identification, effective discharge planning and better access to support.

Help shape the future of healthcare.

Future Healthcare Journal (FHJ), one of the Royal College of Physicians’ journals, is looking to expand its multidisciplinary editorial board and is inviting expressions of interest from healthcare professionals across all specialties and locations.

Published in partnership with Elsevier, FHJ covers a broad range of topics shaping the future of healthcare, including digital health, sustainability, workforce planning, healthcare leadership and future treatments.

As an associate editor, you’ll contribute to the assessment and peer review of submitted papers, help shape the journal’s strategy and support the development of themed issues.
No previous publishing experience is required, and FHJ is committed to championing diversity and inclusion across its editorial board.

The appointment is for an initial two-year term, renewable by mutual agreement for up to six years.

Good medical training should not depend on luck, geography or the determination of individual resident doctors to overcome avoidable barriers.

Reflecting on the findings of the RCP's Training physicians for the future report, Dr Stephen Joseph and Dr Alexandra Pain argue that we already know what good training looks like: meaningful supervision, protected learning, useful assessment and supportive progression.

They explain why educational quality must be visible, measurable and accountable, with resident doctor experience at the centre of how training is assessed and improved.

Party conferences are an important opportunity for us to make sure the experiences of physicians are heard by decisionmakers across the UK.

Throughout conference season, we met with parliamentarians and health spokespeople to discuss the challenges facing our health system and the action needed to address them.

We made the case for action on workforce, retention and training, contributed to discussions about neighbourhood and community care, and championed stronger policies on public health and prevention.

We also hosted two events: one at the Liberal Democrat conference on workforce, and one at the Labour conference on neighbourhood health. Both were incredibly busy and brought together decisionmakers, RCP senior leaders and the wider health sector for valuable discussions on these issues.

We’ll continue to build relationships with the parliamentarians we met during conference season, ensuring they hear about our members’ experiences and what you are telling us.

We’re proud to endorse the new Infection Prevention and Control Environmental Sustainability Statement, developed by DHSC, NHS England and organisations from across health and care.

RCP special adviser on sustainability Dr Mark Harber said the statement provides 'an important framework for bringing together infection prevention, patient safety and environmental sustainability'.

It sets out how evidence-based IPC principles can support safe, lower-carbon and more circular clinical practices, while keeping patient safety paramount.

People with cancer should be able to access the right specialist support wherever they first seek help.

Today’s discussion at the RCP focused on the practical changes needed to reduce variation in acute and supportive oncology: strong local services, better coordination between teams and timely access to specialist expertise.

The new RCP and Macmillan Cancer Support clinical consensus statement recommends 24/7 acute oncology provision, closer integration across acute, cancer, primary, community and palliative care, and a “no wrong front door” approach so patients can reach the right support wherever they enter the system.

Thank you to Dr Hilary Williams, Dr Ashling Lillis, Alison Hodge, Professor Peter Johnson, our patient speaker and everyone who contributed their clinical expertise and lived experience to today’s discussion.
