🎉 RCN campaign win!

As a nursing student in England, you will now be able to get your placement expenses paid in advance, instead of having to wait for a reimbursement.

This change is welcome and will ease financial pressure on students. But there’s more to do. We need a comprehensive new package of financial support for nursing students, bold reform to a broken tuition fee model, and measures to ensure all nursing graduates can secure employment.

No nursing graduate should complete their degree without a clear route into employment.

Yet, graduates often report recruitment freezes, limited Band 5 opportunities and repeated unsuccessful applications after qualification, with some denied access to entry-level nursing roles because employers require previous experience.

All while demand for services are on the rise, and 20,000 full-time equivalent nursing posts remain unfilled in the NHS in England alone.

This week, the RCN Students Committee have written to Duncan Burton, Chief Nursing Officer for England, to demand:
• improvements to nursing recruitment practices, including an end to the widespread inappropriate advertising and incorrect banding of jobs
• for trusts to be properly funded to recruit enough staff to keep patients safe,
• and for workforce planning and university recruitment to be aligned.

We're also demanding urgent plan for this year's graduating cohort, with more band 5 opportunities made available, new graduates prioritised for bank shifts and for those graduates to then be guaranteed a substantive nursing role.
