“I knew surgery was inevitable. I just didn’t know what life would look like afterwards.”
Alli, fifty-one, had spent years running, cycling and adventure racing. But after decades of knee injuries, the pain was becoming harder to work around, and she feared surgery could mean being out of action for eighteen months.
When she met consultant knee surgeon Mr Neil Bradbury at Sulis Hospital, he was honest about how badly damaged her knees were.
For Alli, that honestly mattered. She wanted to know what was really going on and whether she could get back to the life she loved.
She underwent two total knee replacements, 8 weeks apart. Within weeks, she was back on a static bike. Four weeks after surgery, she was cycling outdoors again.
Her rehabilitation became crucial. She set herself goals of twenty-five kilometres, fifty kilometres and one-hundred kilometres, eventually completing a three-hundred-mile test event.
Today, Alli is back to full fitness and competing again, with two new knees.
