THERE IS JUST SOMETHING ABOUT DOLPHINS...

I have been trying to get an opportunity to have some version of a dolphin experience for years.

I FINALLY DID IT !!

However it almost didnt happen. As when i attempted to book for dolphin and picture experience i was discouraged and told it would be up to the trainer/s.

They were unsure whether they could accomodate my disability mobility limitations.

I was told to wait until almost everyone had left after the show and see.

The more people i saw have there experience, the more my anxiety built. I had to make peace with them probably saying ' sorry we cant accomodate you'

Thoughts were; how was i going to step into the pool ?. What if i lose balance?, fall in water?, fall ? and cause a scene.

However they said yes !! and i even kissed a dolphin

Thanks to the support of total of two trainers to get over the edge and two more strangers to get out, i got my experience.🐬🐬

Thanks to the stranger that took the pictures.📸

This experience was a reminder of the importance of having trust and little faith in strangers.

Reminding me that i dont need to have all the steps planned out. Sometimes just trust and take the first step

MANY INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES DISLIKE ASKING FOR HELP BECAUSE....

In discussion with individuals with chronic illness and disabilities these are the reasons given

Often asking for help can threaten personal autonomy

Occassionally invites intrusive questioning

Can leave individual feeling in debt to another person for help support provided

Often ' costs' financially physically and emotionally

Well-meaning helpers can taking over control rather than listening to your expression of needs and wants

Helpers often feel entitled to 'compensation' gratitude for help provided above average

Do you agree ? Do you disagree ? Or feel that there are other reasons for disliking asking for help ?

SPECIAL ASSISTANCE

You have a legal right to free special assistance why flying to and from UK airports. This applies when flying from any UK airport on any airline, or arriving at a UK airport on a UK or EU-registered airline

Special assistance when flying covers airport navigation, mobility support, security screening, and boarding help.

You are elgible for this support whether you regularly use a wheelchair or not. For those fluctuating conditions where walking long distance you may want to consider this as distance to gates is looooonnng. ( this may mean airport wheelchair or transit buggy provided)

Special assistance includes terminal transit from drop-off areas, car parks, or public transport to the gate. If you travel arrangements include coach you may be provide free taxi to airport.

You receive dedicated help through security lanes and passport control. ( As we all had private wheelchairs scooters we just played ' follow the leader' escorted through security today)

Individuals with hidden disability support, includes optional Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyards or badges.

Priority pre-boarding and assistance getting to your cabin seat ( dependent on country leaving or entering uk pre boarding options available, however support to plan and seat always available)

For those unsure about accessing special assistance, remember goal is to preserve energy and reduce pain so you can enjoy your holiday.

As someone who is ambulatory wheelchair user and presentation of disability changed over the years, accepting this assistance has been an adjustment. However thinking of it as V.I.P or being celebrity for day was the key for me
