ITS ABOUT IMPACT

If you are considering applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance ( DLA) or Attendance Allowance (AA) remember it is about " functional impact, not diagnosis"

By this i mean, how does your disability, chronic illness affect your ability to complete the daily living or mobility needs.

What impact does this have on your life?
Do you need support from others ? Need aids and adaptions?
Additional professionals support? Medication?
Does that task take longer than average?
Are you unable to complete yourself or limited capacilities in this area ?

LUPUS AWARENESS MONTH

" THIS BODY IS NOT WHO WE ARE "

Todays spotlight 💡SEAL Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel , is an english singer, songwriter, and record producer.

SEAL has been the recipient of three Brit Awards, four Grammy Awards, MTV Video Music Award, with more than 20 million albums or singles sold.

SEAL was diagnosed with Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), which causes coin like scarring of the skin at 21 years of age.

SEAL has stated in many interviews that lupus had a significant on teenage years and early twenties. As Lupus caused hair loss and scarring on his face, significant impact on confidence and required steriod treatment to manage symptoms.

DLE commonly causes sores on the face and scalp but can affect skin anywhere on the body.

Receiving a chronic illness disagnosis in your twenties ( or any age) can be major shock, abruptly changing your plans, projections, aspirations, sense of self and expectations.

MY ADVICE FOR THOSE WITH A NEW CHRONIC ILLNESS DIAGNOSIS :

Give yourself permission to grieve your past life

Remember that it is normal to feel angry or distressed.

Remember that finding the diagnosis and treatment options is step one.

Focus on the things you can do or things you need, to make coping easier

Start to explore new and ongoing ways to reclaim your confidence

Where possible channelling adversity

This is the most important allow yourself to feel your emotions

Remember your body is not who you are, who you are is deeper than that

If you have energy left over ( remember this step is optional) embrace advocacy and support

WHEELS FOR WELLBEING

Well, will you look at that🤭

I'm BACK first time returning to for 2026.

As; i had fall begining of the year, walked a really short distance outside my home, without my crutch (something i had done on a regular with no issues 100 times). Not sure it was 'drop foot', muscle wastage, muscle weakness, choosen foot wear, fatigue or maybe im developing the allusive numbness symptom ive heard about for years

The potential symptoms for CIDP is long and presentation for everyone different

However my fall, this time resulted in a collar bone fracture.

This CIDP AWARENESS MONTH i am reminded that part of living with CIDP; rare degenerative autoimmune condition is navigating constant changes, unpredictability, different versions of self and constantly adapting to change. While choosing how you are going show up in the world.

I have been diagnosed with CIDP for approximately 20 years now; diagnosed when i was around 23/ 24years old.

Im still healing from the collar bone fractor ( should get final all clear soon) but today feel less fragile and just needed to return to this part of my self care, maintenance journey.

DID I OVER DO IT : YES

AM I TIRED: YES

AM I IN PAIN : YES

DO I FEEL BETTER FOR GOING : YES

We have 4 YES's everyone 😅🤣😁😉

STROKE AWARENESS MONTH

"WE NEED EACH OTHER TO GET THROUGH THIS JOURNEY"

Todays spotlight 💡 Born David Adkins known as SINBAD is an American standup comedian and actor who appeared in dozens of popular films and TV shows over the course of his career.

"Star Search" (Network Ten, 1983-2004) in the mid-1980s. "The Red Foxx Show" (ABC, 1986). However i was first introduced to him as Coach Walter Oakes on "The Cosby Show" (NBC, 1984-1992) spin-off series "A Different World" (NBC, 1987-1993).

SINBAD suffered a major ischemic stroke in October 2020 at the age of 64, caused by a blood clot that traveled from his heart to his brain.
He then subsequently underwent multiple surgeries, including a craniotomy to reduce brain swelling, and was placed in a medically induced coma on a ventilator. He is currently receiving ongoing therapy rehab and support on recovery journey.

DID YOU KNOW?
People from African Cariabean and Asian backgrounds face a significantly higher risk of stroke, often experiencing them at a younger age (around age 62) some even as young as their 30's and can have more severe, fatal outcomes compared to white counterparts.

The reality is that stroke can happen to anyone and usual occurs without warning so you need to act FAST

HOW TO REDUCE RISK FACTORS:
🎭Manage blood pressure, as high blood pressure (hypertension) can increase risk
🎭Make changes to diet; reduce salt, increase vegetables, choose whole grains and limit saturated fat
🎭Stop smoking or va**ng
🎭Limit alcohol
🎭Maintain Weight
🎭Manage undeying conditions

Also be aware that diabetes, obesity, compounded by systemic inequalities and chronic stress can also increase the risk.

In the words of SINBAD " STAY FUNKY AND PRAYED UP"
