A lot of people come into the clinic and ask me,
“Doctor, I’ve suddenly got a hard, painful lump on my lower leg. Is it a blood clot or something?”

The truth is, many people are actually dealing with superficial phlebitis, which is inflammation of a surface vein.

Basically, a vein just under the skin becomes irritated, swollen, and quite painful due to inflammation.

It’s not as serious as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), but it can still cause a fair bit of discomfort, including:

Redness, warmth, and tenderness

Some localised swelling

Pain that makes walking uncomfortable

A vein that feels firm and looks like a raised, cord-like structure

The sensible way to manage it is to:

Apply a cold compress

Elevate the affected leg

Support healthy circulation

Avoid standing for long periods

Keep moving with gentle walking

Many people also use a soothing spray to help reduce the burning and stinging sensations. I often recommend GFOUK® VascuCare Spray to my patients for home use. I receive a lot of positive feedback from people using it in practice — it goes a long way towards easing discomfort and pain, is very easy to apply, and absorbs quickly.

Look after your veins, and they’ll look after you — helping your legs feel comfortable and strong.
