"I heard about Jessica from the Witham WI who said that she was one of the best speakers and the most inspirational one they have had in a long time!"

What an introduction. It has been a wild few months in my life, but I had promised to do a talk for the Wickham St. Paul's WI months ago and didn't want to let them down.

I really enjoy doing talks about my journey into becoming an author and quite what I have been through. It is particularly important for me to talk about A Girl Behind Dark Glasses, A Girl in One Room and A Girl Beyond Closed Doors because severe M.E. needs to be spoken about. Changes need to be made to the treatment sufferers receive. Currently there are numerous severe M.E. sufferers in the UK who are starving to death in hospital. We have just heard the inquest into the incredible Maeve who sadly died of the disease age 27.

We must bring visibility to M.E..

I'm so unbelievably excited to announce that my book, A Girl Beyond Closed Doors, won The People's Book Prize for Best Achievement 2024!

It is even more special because it was announced this month, which is M.E. Awareness Month.

The Best Achievement award is awarded to the book that has made the most positive impact in the world.

It's so wonderful to have won this because it is the last book that I am going to write about my journey with M.E. and it feels like the perfect ending to the trilogy.

I was meant to post this on M.E. Awareness Day (12th May), but of course I ended up crashing and falling asleep!

There is always a cost.

Today I did a talk at the WI in Tiptree.

It felt particularly important as it's International Women's Day.

I was really pleased with how the talk went. I was able to talk about severe M.E., my journey with it and the fact that there are still severe M.E. sufferers being treated horrendously in hospital.

Towards the end , the overwhelming exhaustion hit me like a tonne of bricks and I couldn't hold my head up. It was just so heavy and my neck felt so weak. So the crash came and I found myself reclined in the car and lovely lady was driving me home. I could barely open my eyes without nausea.

But I'm so proud that I managed it. They were such a wonderful bunch of women.

I got home and crashed on the sofa cuddling my four year old daughter, which seemed the best way to end the day.

Happy International Women's Day!

Today is World Prematurity Day and it feels very apt that my third book, which chronicles my journey to becoming a chronically ill mum, was published yesterday because it features my beautiful daughter who was born at 35 weeks. She had to go to special care and I remember seeing all the teeny babies in intensive care with her.

You can read more about her and our journey in A Girl Beyond Closed Doors.

Thank you so much for you support and here is a little picture of my Felicity when she was born.

We have until March to vote for this one but the competition is tight this year so please do share as far as possible.

This week is Severe M.E. Week and yesterday was Severe M.E. Day, where we remember all those suffering and also all those who have sadly passed away from the condition.

I suffered with severe and very severe M.E. for over a decade. I thank my lucky stars that I'm not in that position now. I also can't help but feel guilty that I have improved whilst I've lost many of my friends.

I wrote A Girl Behind Dark Glasses and A Girl in One Room about my journey with severe M.E.. For a long time I was unable to speak or move for myself. I was trapped in one room.

Recently I've been doing some paintings based on the imagery I use in my book. This one below is called The Many Faces of M.E. and has all the descriptions I've used to depict M.E..

The crashing waves of exhaustion, feeling I am a puppet being controlled by the M.E.., the prisoner uniform of black and white stripes, the smoke depicts the life being sucked out of me anc the evil eyes represents the M.E. Monster and the brain fog. Whilst the grim reaper is there because it was always present, waiting to prey.

It's definitely the darkest painting I've ever completed but I feel that it's really important.

My hope is that it shows people the suffering in a different way and compliments my books.

Please remember all those suffering with this torturous condition. Severe M.E. sufferers are often voiceless and are not seen. This has to change.
