Pre-season preparation isn't only happening on the training pitch.

With the new rugby season approaching, we've been getting the pitch-side medical and treatment supplies organised too, making sure everything is ready for training and match days. It may not be the most glamorous part of rugby, but having the right equipment ready when somebody needs attention is an important part of being prepared.

Now we just need the season to start.

You finish a hard training session or longer run, then wake up the next morning aching. Is it normal post-exercise soreness, or could the pain be a sign of injury?

DOMS usually develops after exercise, while pain that starts suddenly during activity, stays focused in one area or affects normal movement or strength may be more suggestive of an injury. However, the difference is not always obvious, and not every injury comes with a clear moment when you immediately know something has happened.

When the pain started, how it feels and what you can do can all help build a clearer picture of what may be going on.

Learn the difference between delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and an injury, when soreness is normal and when it may be time to seek an assessment.

When a rugby pitch gets harder, the game can feel different underfoot. But does a firmer surface actually change injury risk?

With dry conditions continuing towards the end of summer, the relationship between hard ground and injuries is more complex than it might first appear. This article looks at what the research tells us, what may change for players, and some practical considerations when training and playing on firmer ground.

Why are ACL injuries more common in women's rugby?

An ACL injury is one of the most serious knee injuries in rugby and can keep a player out of the game for many months. Research shows that women experience ACL injuries more often than men in comparable team sports, but the reasons are far more complex than simply having weaker knees.

Understanding the interaction between anatomy, movement, strength, training, contact and the sporting environment helps explain why these injuries occur and how the risk may be reduced.

The aim of knee rehabilitation is to improve movement, build strength and restore confidence, helping you return to the activities that matter most.

Training harder doesn't always mean training better.

We've taken a closer look at how training load is managed in rugby, why recovery matters, and practical steps players can take to reduce the risk of overload.

Not all knee pain starts with an obvious injury.

Knee pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems, but the reason behind it is not always clear. While many cases settle with time, persistent or worsening symptoms shouldn’t be ignored.

We’ve taken a closer look at possible causes, early self-care and when to seek medical advice. You’ll also find information on how osteopathic assessment can help identify factors that may be contributing to your symptoms and help guide appropriate management and treatment.
