Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Kerensa Phelps, our Wales representative for The Wheelchair Collective - the UK’s first national advisory network of wheelchair users.

"After unexpectedly becoming disabled as a young adult, I have first-hand experience of the accessibility barriers I had once overlooked – that I am now determined to resolve.

"A wheelchair user of five years, I have used this perspective and lived experience to contribute to a range of advocacy work. Alongside The Wheelchair Collective, I work with Swansea University to provide lived experience to medical students and founded an Accessibility Working Group for Health Volunteers. I also use my role in Swansea Disability Forum to support and advocate for disabled people in South Wales.

"I relish all engagement and advocacy opportunities, with a particular interest in accessible transport and the live music and events industry.

"I look forward to collaborating with other regional representatives to amplify the voice of wheelchair users across the UK!"

If you are a wheelchair user in Wales, you can contact Kerensa at - [email protected]

As we continue the introduction of the ten regional representatives and chair of The Wheelchair Collective - the UK’s first national advisory network of wheelchair users - please give a very warm welcome to North East & Yorkshire representative, Louise Tobin.

"I have been a wheelchair user for four years and I’m passionate about making sure the voices of wheelchair users are heard where it matters most and where assistance lacks the most.

"I became involved with The Wheelchair Collective because I believe real change comes from lived experience – and I'm proud to make changes, assist those that need it and share acquired knowledge from personal experience and previous occupations.

"Outside of The Wheelchair Collective, I spend a lot of time with my large breed dogs, enjoy spending much time with my grandparents and also enjoy creating, using a sewing machine."

If you are a wheelchair user in the North East or Yorkshire, you can contact Louise at - [email protected]

It’s Carers Week (8-14 June) this week and we want to recognise the incredible contribution of unpaid carers across the UK.

Behind many wheelchair users is a carer, family member, friend or loved one providing invaluable support every day.

Caring can be rewarding but it can also be challenging accessing the information, guidance and support you need.

The free resources available through the Wheelchair Alliance Academy brings together information, learning opportunities and practical guidance to help wheelchair users and those who support them make informed decisions.

You can explore the Academy here: www.wheelchair-alliance.co.uk/academy

Our introductions to the founding members of the UK’s first national advisory network of wheelchair users, The Wheelchair Collective, continues this week.

Here, we are proud to introduce our London representative, Jade Carter-Williams.

"I’m Jade and I represent the London region. I currently live in the south east of Greater London and commute to work in Central London regularly.

"I have been a wheelchair user for five years, becoming a more full time user in 2023 following a stroke and decline in my health conditions and overall mobility.

"I am both humbled and proud to be able to be a part of The Wheelchair Collective and I'm excited to be part of a group that puts wheelchair users, their needs and opinions front and centre. I got involved because I believe real change comes from lived experience and I’m passionate about making sure the voices of wheelchair users are heard where it matters most, and that this equates to positive and real change for people.

"I look forward to increasing the reach of The Wheelchair Collective network and can’t wait to start engaging and speaking with more people. There is always a solution to a problem, and if the right voices are at the table then positive change can occur.

"Outside of The Wheelchair Collective, I work full time as an Environmental Health Officer in Local Government, based in central London. I founded and chair our staff disability network and am vice chair, disability and H&S officer for my local Unison Branch."

If you are a wheelchair user in London, you can contact Jade at - [email protected]

We are continuing with our introductions to the founding members of the UK’s first national advisory network of wheelchair users, The Wheelchair Collective.

So, please join us in welcoming South West representative, Howl Baer.

"I have been a wheelchair user for five years now, experiencing both part-time and full-time use in that period.

"The reason I joined The Wheelchair Collective was in order to ensure all voices are heard across the region and bring them to a space where real change can happen.

"I’m looking forward to working to achieve better access and a less stressful process to accessing the appropriate equipment.

"In my free time, I volunteer for EDS UK and enjoy spending time exploring nature across the region."

Recently we announced the appointment of the founding members of the UK’s first national advisory network of wheelchair users, The Wheelchair Collective.

We are proud to have a representative for all ten regions of the UK, alongside a Chair.

Over the next few weeks, we will be introducing you to each representative.

Please give a warm welcome to South East representative, Gina Perryman.

"As a wheelchair user for over 30 years, I bring extensive lived experience and a strong commitment to ensuring that the voices of wheelchair users are heard and valued in decision-making spaces.

"The reason I joined The Wheelchair Collective was because I believe meaningful, lasting change is driven by those with direct experience, alongside the sharing of best practices to achieve the best possible outcomes for wheelchair users.

"I am proud to contribute to a group that places lived experience at the heart of its work.

"Alongside this role, I work with HIVE Portsmouth, a local charity supporting the community. There, I am involved in a Disability Advisory Group led by disabled people, which focuses on addressing everyday challenges, with particular attention to improving wheelchair services and accessible transport."

If you are a wheelchair user in the South East, you can contact Gina at - [email protected]
