Recovery after proctectomy (Barbie bum + stoma) surgery | Day 12

Final day as a hospital patient 🥳

After 12 days in hospital I got the amaaaaazing news that I can go home 🙌🏽

Didn’t expect to be going home with a drain, but no complaints if it meant I could get out sooner.

Stoma was working well and Barbie bum was only a bit uncomfortable.

Ready to start the real recovery at home 🏠

Recovery after proctectomy (Barbie bum + stoma) surgery | Days 5 - 8

After finally escaping High Dependency, we hit another bump. A build-up of fluid in my pelvis caused an infection — I was sweating nonstop, lost what little appetite I’d regained, and was completely wiped out. I slept so much and felt pretty rubbish.

We tried lots of antibiotics, but they weren’t enough to clear it, so I ended up back in surgery to have the infection drained.

It also took a bit of time to get my pain meds right afterwards, but once they finally kicked in, I was back in my room and ready to start moving forward again.

Follow to see the rest of my recovery 💜

Waking up from my proctectomy (Barbie bum + stoma) surgery 👀

I usually wake up from surgery pretty easily, but this one hit different. It took me ages to come around, and I was apparently very delirious and in loads of pain, but thankfully, I remember almost none of it 😅

A few hours later once I was finally settled and bundled up, and I decided it was a great idea to message the family group chat.

Prize for anyone who can decipher what I was trying to say… 🤦🏽‍♀️

What I packed in my hospital bag and what I actually used 👜

Anything I missed??

These were my top 4 items 👍🏽

✅ Sleep aids - earplugs and and eyemask to help drown out the noise and bright lights of the hospital
✅ Skincare and toiletries - all helped to make me feel fresh when I was mostly bed bound
✅ Long phone charging cable to reach behind the bed
✅ Electrolyte sachets - I love the Humantra sachets so stocked up to help me stay on top of my hydration and stopped me getting bored of drinking water

And these were the things I didn’t need 👎🏽

❌ Books and games - I didn’t have the energy to focus/concentrate on very much. My eyes were dilated from all the meds so also only watched a couple of things on screen
❌ Snacks - I didn’t know what I would be allowed to eat and when, so didn’t want the temptation of any sweet treats if I couldn’t have them. As soon as I had an appetite and was allowed to eat, my family bought me all my faves

Celebrating my pre-surgery body 💛

Before my stomach surgery I wanted something beautiful to remember this chapter, so I had a sculpture made of my bust.

I wanted to capture my body and scars before it all changes again.

Cannot wait to see the finished piece ✨

The final few days at my flat 🥺

In November I had surgery for a permanent stoma bag.

To help with my recovery, I moved back home with mum and dad. Never expected to be moving back with them, but lucky to have so much love and support 💖

Making Rice Krispie cakes with my nephew is much better than Ibiza 💙💙💙

I should have been in Ibiza, but instead I decided that I’d much rather be at home taking it easy
