Orchid is delighted to be supporting this exciting initiative from the European Association of Urology Patient Office.

The BALANCE study is a global study which seeks to understand how prostate cancer impacts Black African and Black Caribbean men as well as men with mixed ethnic backgrounds. It is being supported by a number of charities and community groups worldwide and has just celebrated its UK launch at the Institute of Cancer Research in London. Orchid Nurse Rob is proud to be part of the project team.

It is hoped that the findings of the survey will help change health policy and improve clinical guidelines for men from these communities who have or will be affected by prostate cancer.

A cancer diagnosis never affects just one person.

Behind every diagnosis there is often a partner, husband, wife, family member, or friend trying to come to terms with the news while providing strength and support to the person they love.

Partners can experience their own fear, uncertainty, and emotional distress, while also taking on new caring responsibilities and navigating appointments, treatment, and an uncertain future. Their needs can sometimes become secondary as attention understandably focuses on the person with cancer.

The Queen’s reflections are an important reminder that those supporting someone through cancer need support too.

Cancer changes lives - not only for the person diagnosed, but for those who walk alongside them. No partner or family member should feel they have to face that journey alone.

If someone you love is going through male cancer, remember that support is here for you too. Our helpline is available for partners, wives, husbands, family members and loved ones who need someone to talk to, ask questions or simply listen.

If a condition does not improve after an initial course of treatment then a referral to a urologist is recommended.

Prostate cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages, which is exactly why knowing your risk factors matters: age, family history, and ethnicity (Black African and Black Caribbean men are at double the risk).

Most testicular lumps are found by the man himself, not a doctor. And a cancerous lump is usually painless - which is exactly why men wait.

Around 70% of those diagnosed in the UK are aged 15 to 45. Most changes aren't cancer. But only a doctor can tell you which is which.
