From August 2026, our practice will no longer prescribe norethisterone or similar medication on the NHS to delay periods for non-medical reasons, such as holidays, weddings, travel or sporting events.

Why has this changed?
We understand that there are times when delaying a period would be helpful. However, prescribing medication to delay a period for personal or lifestyle reasons is not considered an NHS-funded treatment.

Like all GP practices, we are expected to follow NHS guidance to ensure NHS medicines are prescribed for clinically appropriate and evidence-based medical conditions, helping to make the best use of NHS resources for everyone.

When can it still be prescribed?
Norethisterone and other hormonal treatments may still be prescribed on the NHS when they are needed to treat a medical condition, for example:

Heavy periods
Painful periods
Endometriosis or other gynaecological conditions
When recommended by a hospital specialist
I would still like to delay my period
If you would like to delay your period for a holiday, special occasion, travel or another non-medical reason, you can obtain this treatment through a registered private provider, such as an online pharmacy or travel clinic.

Your local pharmacist may also be able to offer advice on the options available and help you choose a safe and appropriate treatment.

If you’re unsure whether your symptoms are related to a medical condition or have any concerns about your periods, please contact the practice and we’ll be happy to advise you.

You can get quick relief for many minor health conditions with medicines from your local pharmacy or supermarket, no prescription needed.

Your GP, pharmacists and hospital doctors don’t usually prescribe treatments that you can buy yourself. Your local pharmacy will be able to provide advice and make sure you get the right care. If you’re unsure or have any questions, just ask them.

High blood pressure - or hypertension - often shows no warning signs, yet it increases the risk for heart disease, stroke, blindness, dementia, and other complications.

A simple blood pressure check can be life-saving.

Getting your blood pressure measured the right way helps ensure accurate results.
Incorrect positions can lead to incorrect readings.

✔ Sit with your back supported
✔ Legs uncrossed and feet flat on the floor
✔ Arm supported with the cuff at heart level
✔ Use correct cuff size
✔ Rest for at least 5 minutes before the reading
✔ Do not talk during or between measurements
✔ Avoid exercise, tea/coffee, and smoking for at least 30 minutes before reading

Small steps can make a big difference in protecting your health.
