I’ve been wanting to share something about altered states of consciousness for ages but just haven’t got round to it. So here goes!

Most of us move through life in what’s called a ā€œnormalā€ waking state of consciousness… but consciousness is far more flexible than we often realise.

Altered states of consciousness (ASC) are generally defined as ā€œtransient and reversible changes in subjective experience from an average normal, waking state that are noticeable from a first person perspectiveā€ (Fort et al, 2025).

Wright et al. (2024) found that many people experience profound altered states through contemplative and mindfulness-based practices, often describing feelings of awe, connection, peace, creativity, insight, and lasting shifts in how they relate to themselves and the world around them.

I find this so interesting because it suggests these states aren’t ā€œfar awayā€ or rare… they’re already accessible through simple, embodied practices like meditation, time in nature, yoga, breathwork, and sound.

Therapeutic sound offers an accessible, gentle, and non-invasive way of exploring altered states of consciousness. Through long, sustained tones, gradual transitions between instruments, and carefully woven soundscapes, therapeutic sound can gently support the brain and body into deeply relaxed, non-ordinary states of awareness.

A recent review by Fort et al. (2025) identified eight common dimensions of ASC. See my slides for details about what it’s like to experience these states.

Have you ever noticed any of these shifts in your own experience? If so, I’d love to hear about them!

There’s something so powerful about closing our eyes. It’s a simple, accessible, and restorative way of stepping away from the external world and reconnecting with ourselves. When used with therapeutic sound, the simple act of closing our eyes can help us access those in-between states, making space for insight and inner exploration.

If you’re interested in exploring these liminal spaces with me, I’d love to see you at one of my upcoming sound journeys!

I’ve now uploaded my first guided tarot meditation to YouTube. If you feel drawn to listen, I’d love to hear what you think!

This meditation was recorded spontaneously yesterday and I simply followed what was emerging in the moment. The audio is unedited. I like the imperfections and the sense of being there with me outdoors, even with the occasional sound of people walking past!

As a recovering academic, I’m still learning how to create without overanalysing everything. The unplanned approach I used for this recording was really quite therapeutic and I enjoyed it a lot.

I’ve used tarot as a personal therapeutic tool for years, and my approach is intuitive. The same card can hold different meanings for me depending on the moment, the context, and what I’m sensing.

I’m looking forward to recording more tarot-inspired guided meditations in the coming months and will also be incorporating some guided meditations into my upcoming sound sessions.

My upcoming Here Comes the Sun gong bath at New Winton Village Hall will include a guided meditation inspired by The Sun tarot card. If you enjoy this recorded meditation and you’re free on June 27th, I’d love to see you there! It’s Ā£18 for this 2-hour session and I have lots of space available.

You can listen to the guided meditation and book upcoming in person sound sessions via the link in my bio.

Found the perfect spot for my guided meditation! 🐸

I recently attended an amazing one-day course in guided meditation with the and for my case studies, I’m going to start incorporating guided meditation into some of my upcoming sound sessions.

I’m also planning to experiment with creating guided meditation recordings out in nature, using tarot as a guide. As I’m new to this and still developing my skills, I have absolutely no idea how it’ll work out 🤣

I’m not officially a ā€œtarot reader,ā€ but I’ve personally used the cards intuitively as a therapeutic and reflective tool for years.

If anything feels successful, I’ll share recordings online (not entirely sure where or how yet, but I’ll keep you posted!). These will likely be raw and unfiltered, but I may add sound afterwards if it feels right at the time.

Let me know if this is something you’d be interested in listening to, and watch this space for updates 🌿
