Peter Le Marchant Trust We are a Leicestershire-based charity providing fully-accessible day trips and holidays on the waterways. Experience with us!

Bringing the joy of canal boating to everyone, including those with disabilities. Based in the heart of Loughborough, the Peter Le Marchant Trust is a dedicated charity providing canal boat trips on the picturesque waterways of Leicestershire. For over 45 years, we have been offering day trips and holidays to children and adults living with physical disabilities, social issues and mental health conditions. We believe in the therapeutic benefits of time spent on the water, and we witness the positive impact of our ‘blue health’ trips on both our passengers and volunteers daily. Our specially designed boats are equipped to offer a unique and accessible experience for everyone. Our mission is to make day trips and holidays accessible to all, promoting inclusivity and well-being through our services. The Peter Le Marchant Trust was established in the 1970s by Clare Le Marchant Connell, and today, we proudly operate three boats dedicated to holidays and day trips. Our success is driven by our passionate volunteers and a committed team of core office staff who ensure the best experience for our visitors. At the Peter Le Marchant Trust, we are devoted to making a difference, one trip at a time.

💙 What makes volunteering so rewarding?

Our volunteer Nicola Stevenson recently spoke to Charnwood Borough Council about her experience volunteering aboard our canal boats and what she enjoys about giving her time to the Trust.

We’re delighted to see Nicola featured as part of the Charnwood Volunteers initiative, helping more people discover the opportunities available to get involved in their local community.

Could volunteering with PLMT be for you? From joining our boat crews to supporting the Trust in other ways, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.

An autumn morning on the waterways with Charnwood Arts 🍂

It was lovely to welcome the Grieve, Breathe, Create group from Charnwood Arts aboard for one of our Tranquil Tuesday trips recently.

With hot chocolate, biscuits and sketchbooks at the ready, the group spent the morning enjoying the canal together – with a kingfisher even making an appearance along the way! 💙

We were especially pleased to receive this feedback afterwards:
“So lovely to be on the water for the morning together. The staff were excellent and the refreshments were great. It was a really lovely morning, great value for money and I highly recommend.”

Our boats are purpose-built to accommodate people living with physical disabilities, particularly wheelchair users, as well as people living with mental health conditions, helping more groups enjoy time together on the waterways.

💚 This World Mental Health Day, we're highlighting the benefits of Blue Health.

Blue Health is the connection between our wellbeing and spending time in or around water, something we see reflected in the experiences of our passengers on the waterways.

A trip aboard our boats offers time outdoors, contact with nature, opportunities to connect with others and a change of pace from everyday routines.

Importantly, those benefits should be accessible to everyone. Our boats are purpose-built to accommodate people living with mental health conditions and physical disabilities, particularly wheelchair users, opening up the waterways to people who may otherwise face barriers to enjoying them.

Creating opportunities to experience the wellbeing benefits of our waterways is at the heart of what we do 💙

Over the years, we've welcomed lots of families aboard Santa’s Sleighboat – and their feedback probably says more about the experience than we ever could 💙

Our boats are purpose-built to accommodate people living with physical disabilities, particularly wheelchair users, as well as people living with mental health conditions, helping make the experience accessible to more families.

“One of the best Santa visits I have been on. Fantastic for the children, not commercial, good old-fashioned Santa trip, with so much time with Santa. Definitely not to be missed.” - David J.

“Absolutely brilliant! Staff so friendly and very helpful; can't wait until next year.” - Lisa

“Fab time on Santa Boat this morning. Lovely elves, very friendly and great with the children. Santa was brilliant. Loved it.” - Sue Swann

Could you be part of our crew in 2027?

We’re now looking for expressions of interest from new volunteer crew members to join the Peter Le Marchant Trust for next season and beyond, with full crew training taking place during February and March 2027.

Joining our crew is a chance to learn new skills, spend time out on the waterways and become part of a friendly, sociable volunteer team, while helping us create enjoyable and accessible days out for our passengers 💙

We’re looking for people who are friendly, caring and reliable, comfortable working as part of a team and willing to learn. The role can involve helping with locks and mooring, so a reasonable level of physical fitness is needed, alongside a commitment to making sure every passenger is treated with dignity, respect and inclusion.
