One of the biggest frustrations with laser tattoo removal is not knowing what to expect.

People often come in believing every tattoo fades at the same rate, that the laser does all the work, or that removal is simply a case of turning up for a few sessions and waiting for the magic to happen.

The reality is a little more nuanced.

The type of ink, the age of the tattoo, its location on the body, your immune system, and even your lifestyle can all influence the results you see.

Understanding how the process works helps set realistic expectations and usually leads to better outcomes too.

That's why education is such a big part of what we do at Rethink Me.

Most people think the laser removes the tattoo.

It doesn't.

The laser breaks the ink into smaller particles.

After that, it's your body that does the hard work.

That's why what you do between sessions matters.

This is what laser tattoo removal actually looks like beneath the skin.

There's no burning, or melting and it's not damaging healthy tissue.

The laser targets the tattoo pigment with ultra-fast pulses of energy, breaking the ink into tiny fragments small enough for your immune system to gradually remove naturally over time.

In this animation, you can see macrophage cells (part of your body’s clean-up crew ) moving in to absorb and carry away the shattered ink particles after treatment.

That’s why tattoo removal is a process.
The laser starts the job.
Your body finishes it.

This is also why things like hydration, movement, sleep, nutrition and leaving enough time between sessions can make such a difference to your results.

Your immune system plays a bigger role than most people realise.

Still living with old, heavy or blocky brows that no longer feel like you?

Now is the perfect time to start your Semi Permanent Make Up removal journey. ✨

One thing many people don’t realise is that laser removal can often be started sooner on SPMU brows than on traditional body tattoos because:

🖋️ Brow pigments sit much more superficially in the skin
🖋️ There’s usually less pigment density compared to body tattoos
🖋️ The treatment area experiences lighter trauma during application

Over time, brow trends change. Faces change. Style changes.

You don’t have to stay stuck with brows that feel too dark, too solid, too warm toned or simply no longer “you.”

Removal creates the space for softer, fresher, more natural brows moving forward.

Possible side effects of Laser Tattoo Removal… and one of the strangest is called “frosting.” 🍰

No, not the cake kind.

During treatment, the laser breaks down the tattoo pigment using heat and energy. This creates tiny gas bubbles under the skin, which can make the tattoo temporarily turn white and appear slightly raised.

That white, frosted look is actually a completely normal reaction and usually fades within minutes after treatment. In fact, it’s often a sign the laser has successfully reached the ink.

It tends to be most noticeable during the first few sessions and becomes less obvious over time as the tattoo fades.

Laser tattoo removal is considered a very safe procedure when performed correctly, but understanding the healing process helps take away some of the fear around it.

Your skin is healing. Your body is processing the ink. And your tattoo removal journey is already underway.

One of the biggest myths around laser tattoo removal?
That it “destroys” your skin.

When performed properly, laser tattoo removal is designed to target pigment, not damage healthy skin tissue.

Like any treatment, there can be temporary side effects afterwards, which is why choosing the right technician and machine matters more than people realise.

I’ve broken down the most common side effects I see with clients in this carousel, so you know exactly what’s normal, what’s temporary, and what to look out for.
