Changes in s*x drive on GLP-1 medication are documented and surprisingly common, but it’s almost never discussed at the consultation stage.

I mention it because these are conversations people often feel they can’t bring up.

If you’re on weight loss medication and the pill, your contraception may not be working as well as you think. 

Some weight loss medications can slow gastric emptying -the rate at which the stomach processes and moves things through. For oral contraceptives, which rely on being absorbed at the right time and in the right amounts, this can affect how reliably they work. 

This isn’t a reason not to use weight loss medication. It’s a reason to have a proper conversation about your full picture before you start – and to ensure your contraception is reviewed as part of that. 

Current guidance suggests using an additional method of contraception – such as barrier methods – for a period after starting or adjusting the dose. The specifics will depend on the medication, the dose, and your individual situation. 

This is exactly the kind of detail that should form part of a thorough weight loss medication consultation – but often doesn’t, particularly when medication is dispensed without one. If you’re taking weight loss medications and nobody has raised this with you, please do bring it up. It matters.

Meet Natasha.

Natasha qualified as a paediatric nurse in 2005. Her early career in palliative and end-of-life care shaped the compassionate, patient-centred approach that still runs through everything we do today.

In 2010, she moved into aesthetic medicine – training extensively alongside five surgeons and never stopping learning since.

Today, Natasha specialises in menopause and andropause care, medical weight management, and advanced aesthetics. She leads a team she’s incredibly proud of.

She’s also just a very good person to talk to.
